Making my pc a trusted device

    I have recently purchased and installed a new computer. I am using Windows 10 Pro 64bit - v1909 - Build 18363.1082

One of the most frustrating problems that I have at the moment is when I go into on-line banking. I am asked all of the time to log in using the card reader and this is driving me nuts. On a couple of occasions whilst logged in to the bank, I have been asked to click on a message 'make this a trusted device' but, even having done that it just doesn't work and I have to use the card reader again.

I have followed closely all of the instructions that I have found on the internet but just cannot to get it to work. I go into the security settings as instructed but I don't get the screens that they say I should. For instance, I can never see the word 'Verify' as they suggest and I also never see the message 'I frequently log on to this machine so don't ask for a code'

I have asked this question on the Microsoft Forum but I don't get anywhere I'm afraid. If anyone can help me with this I will be forever grateful. Thank you.

If you nose around your bank's website you'll find their explanation that they are required to enforce more stringent rules than they used to and that they interpret that as use of a card reader / use of their own app / stepping through additional security questions / a combination of those factors.

There is nothing Windows can do to circumvent those rules.

Thank you for your input, however, I have tried this route and as I said in my first post, I cannot get to a screen where the the option is for me to check 'I frequently sign in etc etc'. There appears to be a number of routes to get to security screens but none of them work. Is there anywhere listed on the exact route to take? for instance, when I go into my Microsoft Account I am not asked to enter a security code, I just click on 'sign-in' and that's it, I'm in!

I would have thought that as there seems to be an item covering 'how to remove a trusted device' then there must be a list somewhere on my system that shows what I have listed as trusted devices but I can't find that even. Is there somewhere I can look to see if my machine is listed as such?

Thank you too Try3, yes I have seen various messages on the bank's site but, there is also a message that has appeared saying that if I trust this device, then a card reader is not necessary, my normal log-in procedure is all that is required.

As I say, it's enough to make you tear your hair out!!

What bank? The reason I ask is because I was always asked to use a card reader for online banking... because I could never receive the bank's 2FA SMS passcode messages on my phone.

It took me ages to sort that out... it turned out to be a 'Filter Unknown Senders' setting on my phone. Works like a dream now and is MUCH easier than using the bank's card reader.

Apologies if this isn't relevant. I don't use a Microsoft Account, always just a local account.

    Hope this helps...

That message must be generated by your bank's website not by Windows. So only your bank can explain what ought to happen. Mine has an online helpdesk for internet banking issues.

I am using Lloyds bank and will try to have a word with them.

Is anyone able to answer my question regarding being able see anywhere if my pc is listed as trusted?

The answer lies in the link supplied by Freebooter. It is for your Microsoft Account and devices associated therewith. It has no bearing on your bank's web site and their interpretation and implementation of a "Trusted Device". The mere fact on your MS account you are not asked for anything other than User ID/PW indicates MS has the device classified as "trusted". It is not listed, per se, anywhere else. So for MS, it is a de facto trusted device.

Your bank's site may be convoluted enough that you may not be seeing a small check box, or options panel, or something where you can designate your PC as trusted in your eyes and make the bank happy. They cannot see anything about your PC, nothing. You need to manually ensure to them it is, indeed, trusted, and stop asking for the card. If digging deep into every screen presented yields no answer for you, call the support line. There has to be User Level Tech Support at a bank the size of Lloyds.

What browser are you using? I also have a Lloyds account (but don't have a card reader unfortunately, only a NatWest one).

It looks like the Lloyds online banking website has recently been upgraded. Does your difficulty with online banking coincide with the bank's online upgrade?

From my phone app it looks like the card reader is for Lloyds business accounts only?

    Is yours a business account?

Can you post a link to the Lloyds support info on the bank's website so I know we're looking at the same web page(s)? The reason I ask is because I did a search for card reader in the support area:

I'm off to Wales for the rest of the day but will check back later.

Hello folks, apologies for late response.

Well yesterday I did a load of fiffing and faffing about and at the end of the day I decided to turn the pc off completely (I don't normally do that, it's usually on 24/7) and then this morning, I booted up and went straight to the bank site and logged in and, absolutely no problems, no request to get the card reader out!!

Don't ask me what I did though, I didn't write anything down. All that I did was to keep trying whatever route I could find via the security screens and well, something worked.

The strange thing is, during the course of the morning I took a photo with my iPhone and, when I tried to extract it from the phone to the pc, all I could get was a message saying this folder is empty. I scoured the internet to see if I could resolve it and I found something and, I had to go to the phone's settings and do something to 'trust' again. Seems that the problem may have been linked in some way.

Anyway, Thank you all for your input, very much appreciated.

FYI RickC, yes it is a Lloyds Business Account, I am Treasurer of a local club. If your trip to Wales was for pleasure, I hope you had an enjoyable day. Pembrokeshire is my favourite county, I have many fond memories, I was at the School of Artillery in the 1950's.
