I am not certain that I actually have Windows10 installation media?
when doing the download for W10 UPGRADE, I was offered and did make a W10 DVD copy, which I believe was intended for W10 upgrading of another computer that has W8.1 already present/installed.
Is that ISO copy suitable as the required "installation media"? I hope so.

That's ok. The tutorial below can help show you how to create a Windows 10 installation USB if you like.

You could also create and boot from a recovery drive for this as well.

I really do appreciate your info very much; however, I become confused easily. You began by saying "That's ok." Do you mean that the ISO made on DVD at time of my upgrading to W10 will serve as the installation media required to avoid SAM file in use issue that I reported earlier in this thread?

I do not at this time have a 4GB flash drive available, but do have DVDs. I suppose that I can get a 4GB flash drive soon enough to create a Windows 10 installation USB. But I will have acces to my daughter's Win8 laptop tomorrow, although it may not be of use if I must log on as Administrator since she will not be there, I'm babysitting). I plan to bring DVDs with me tomorrow, if I can use those rather than getting a USB flash drive. Otherwise, I will need to make an additional stop to buy the USB drive.

Which is preferrable: DVD media or USB media, considering that I am presently not able to signin due to the User Profile Service service failure at login error ( original problem here).

Hopefully, I will read your reply prior to leaving here (in NY) in the early morning.

    Regards,
    VinceB

PS: I wish I had made a USB recovery and USB installation drive at the appropriate time!

    Vince,

Yes, that means that you could boot from the USB or DVD created from the ISO file to open a command prompt at boot. This command prompt will be outside of Windows to avoid in "in use" issues. :)

Personally, I prefer USB since it's faster, more flexible, and more reliable than a DVD. However, either will work though.

    Great to see that reply!

i will bring my ISO DVD with me tomorrow, just to use daughter's laptop DVD reader to view what is on the DVD. I need something to do while grandkids do their own thing on their iPads, etc.!

Option One: Open Command Prompt at Boot using Windows 10 Installation

I do not use a Virtual Box machine or such VirtueBox (free) software. Have not seen the screen as shown in example for Option One.

Does the ISO file that I made at time of doing the auto-upgrade to W10 serve as "installation media"?

on Wednesday I will have access to a W8 laptop, and hopefully will be able to burn DVDs to generate "installation media". I might request borrowing that laptop....

    Brink:

I have the ISO DVD in drive D on my machine. From an Off condition, will the machine boot from drive D, rather than looking first at drive C? It seems not to be looking at D.
i have tried this several times w/o success.
Or, do you mean that I must use the ISO to create DVD or USB installation media? How do I create it?

No, the PC will not automatically boot from the DVD.

See if you may be able to boot to advanced startup, select "Use a device", and select to boot from the DVD or USB.
