Press the windows key + R to open a run dialog box. Run netplwiz
Uncheck the box that says "User must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
Click Apply
Click Cancel on the next window that opens
Click the Apply button again on the first window
Click OK
I think I need professional help with this one. Somehow my User Name is shown in User Accounts as "*******@comcast.net". The login screen believes I am Robert Shiffman and accepts my PIN.

You do not need to go anywhere else, just need to use the right tools. Windows Administrator Tools > Computer Management > Local Users and Groups > Users. See if it shows up in there. You can also use Powershell. How to List All User Accounts on a Windows System Using PowerShell
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/pow...powershell-5.1
Power shell only found one user: me, tcebo. Admin tools doesn't have a Users choice but search for "user" finds User Accounts. There, too, only my principal account is listed. It seems that the system doesn't know about the ghost account. But the log on screen thinks it's there. User Accounts in Settings no longer shows the bogus account, so maybe the system has removed it.
I'm going to reboot now and see whether the log on screen has changed
I know nothing about the subject but I have seen other TenForum threads in which this doubling up on the login screen was explained.
- There was no danger from the doubling up
- There was a method of stopping it

In response to a similar problem, lx07 suggested, "Try toggling the "Users must enter a username and password" checkbox in netplwiz on and off a few times pressing "Apply" in between.".
So you might try that.

Thanks, Try3, I'll look for the threads.
I did reboot and the double accounts were still visible. The one with my full name is correct but the boot process tries to use the other first. The name of the other is "tcebo", which is my directory in C:\Users.
OK, I tried the Netplwiz thing -- and it worked!
Aside from that, netplwiz is completely confused about my data. There's probably a way to fix that.
Thanks greatly for your help!
