Well, thanks for your help, everyone </sarc>

I've decided to give it a shot anyway, as it appears to be 240....

We shall see (said the blind man).

EDIT: The download is very quick, compared to the betas.

I right clicked on Reservation Flag and selected Check Upgrade Status or Get Windows 10
    The upgrade process began

And yes, you must upgrade to get product activation

All right, interesting! Right now I am at 45% of the download from that new tool. Selected to Upgrade this PC, this time. IF this will, for some reason, not work I will try the "Get Windows 10" from the reservation icon.

    Thank you.

Yeah, I tried that. Wouldn't happen, hence the ISO download. Currently at 65%

If it won't go over my 10162-on-8.1 setup, I'll roll-back to 8.1 and try again.

EDIT: It wouldn't, so I will. Well, it would, but only as a clean install.

That's not an option, as I've no intention of re-installing 150gb of programs and
games for what will still, essentially, be a trial version.

Ok just want to confirm I'm right, if I am an insider then 10240 is the latest build, and if i download to a USB Drive rather than burn the ISO (is this the same thing?) I will be able to do a clean install from the USB and as windows is already activated it will automatically do the same. I don't need to do anything else first.

Or have I got it completely wrong?

    Thanks for any help.

If you are referring to me, I do not need to make any backup image of Win 7. I am ready to install my programs again, no problem at all. I would perform a clean installation, anyway. ALL I need is to install and activate the reserved copy of Windows 10 Home that MS promised. Nothing more.

I rerun the media tool, that new tool, for one more time right now. This time I have selected "Upgrade this PC". It is unbelievable that it downloads everything again. I have already downloaded the ISO today, with the same tool, and I already have that hidden folder of approx. 5 GB since yesterday! But right now, another big download is in progress:

    Attachment 26491

I do not mind. As long as it will install, upgrade, activate AT LAST!
Remember you do not need the tool to upgrade subsequent to downloading the ISO - running setup from the sources folder accomplishes the same thing. I think that was added specifically for one time upgrades.

Nice to see MS updated this tool to include Win7 & Win10 - it was a great way to get Win8 (the Win7 web process was sketchy).

Use the media creation tool to download Windows. This tool provides the best download experience for customers running Windows 7, 8.1 and 10.
It's also nice that you can get both 32 & 64 bit architectures in one download - that makes it easier to help clients upgrade.
I'll give it a shot after it finishes downloading.

I'll test using the Win7 key on a clean install ... yes, I know other members have said you must upgrade first.
This is what I'll do to test the procedure. Might be wasting my time, but we shall see
I'll post the results in a few hours.

It sounds as though the process is the same for Win8
    Pre-installed (OEM)
Win8.x: It should find the Win8 key in the firmware. If not see How do I find my Windows product key? on the Software Downloads page
Win7: You'll have to enter the key for your existing OS

Retail (8 or 7): You'll have to enter the key for your existing OS

    Windows 10
    • If you will be installing the operating system for the first time, you will need your Windows product key (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx).

How to perform a clean installation of Windows
    5. On the Enter the product key to activate Windows page, enter your product key. The product key should be in a purchase confirmation email if you bought Windows 10. It looks like this: PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

So are those dell system that have an oem-slp key won't work now? If so, that is a bummer. I was told the exact opposite in the dell forums. So those that have oem-slp key will have to use the key on the back of the machine to even upgrade?

    In faq, (Links removed)
My Windows 7 product key won’t verify. What’s the problem?

The most common issue is the use of a product key for a product not currently supported by the site such as an Upgrade key, an MSDN key, product keys for pre-installed media or an Enterprise edition key. For access to MSDN products or Enterprise edition visit the MSDN Portal or the Volume Licensing Service Center. Upgrades and pre-installed media are not currently supported by the tools on the site.

I should of known, Microsoft wouldn't allow legit dell oem-slp keys to be upgraded or installed.
