IF you re-read the msgs in here you will see that YES windows removes any changes user has done to their registry after installing the latest updates, that's why we have to edit the registry and PUT back the "Shell Icons" folder. With the needed changes IN the folder, and then the short cut icons are gone.
Obviously I would never had written anything to this forum before having read the previous postings - and having recreated the "Shell Icons" and 29 keys, too. This firstly DID NOT WORK, I tried many times. Later on I found out that it just didn't work for a single user - myself. The other 3 users had no arrows anymore (even with the correct Empty.ico path as value of key 29 !), but I still had. I nearly gave up but than realized that Windows 10 had given wrong permissions on both the directory containing the Empty.ico file, and the Shell Icons registry keys: amongst other strange permissions, Windows allowed (by default) no read or write permission to the OWNER-CREATOR of the Shell Icons registry key !!! Without going too much into the details, all following steps were then necessary:
    - move the subdirectory containing the Empty.ico file from the Windows to the User directory
    - assign new permissions to this directory
    - delete the erroneous permissions on the Shell Icons registry key (the wrong permissions resurrected twice, only the third deletion was successful)
    >> at this stage the "arrow" became a quite big black square (see picture)
    - rename the 29 subkey, create a new 29 subkey (with the path to Empty.ico)
    >> still a black square for myself, no arrows nor black squares for all other users
    - finally deleting the path to Empty.ico lead to the desired result…

Maybe the Winaeros Shortcut Aero Editor could have saved some headache (thanks OldMike65). But I don't like tools the action of which I do not know. Chapter closed for myself, I just have now to do the same steps on 2 laptops.

Just use Winaero's Shortcut Arrow Editor, so much less headaches.
    (Sorry Shawn! )
    No problem Edwin.

I only didn't include it in the tutorial since it doesn't officially support Windows 10, and it's no longer being supported by the developer. Instead, the developer has switched to using an all-in-one tweaking utility program. I just don't support those type of programs. It's to easy for folks to mistakenly set something they don't understand and cause issues.

Ahh just to clarify this, It was not me that suggested you use Aero Editor, that was Edwin not me. I prefer to edit my registry for my short-cut fixes. Also next time we all have another major update from Windows 10, same thing just might happen, as windows update removed all our modification's in the registry.

Just my 2cents on this Shawn, I agree 100% I stopped using those kind of tweaking programs long time ago! I prefer using the tutorials like you post, and other ones like yours posted in other places. I just don't trust those tweak programs.

    I understand.
I don't encourage using those kinds of 'inexplicable' utilities very often either.
I just happen to still have the standalone utility, before it was bundled in the 'Winaero Tweaker' suite
It does, however, do the exact same thing the tutorial does, it just provides and places the elements for you.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    I will delete my post.

It's no problem or inconvenience Edwin. Your post can stay.

If it works for you and others, then that's great and should be shared if you like.

I was just explaining why I couldn't officially support it by including it in the tutorial. That's all. :)

I had the same problem, so I tried a solution that had been suggested for previous versions of Windows. It seems to work.

In regedit, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile. In the right column, change lsShortcut to XlsShortcut.

After the November Win 10 update version 1511,10586 my Reg tweaks were broken. I just wanted to let everyone know that Sally's solution still works to completely remove the Desktop Icon Arrows. No other reg tweaks needed. :)

Why use a program when adding a single letter to a Registry Entry works perfectly ?

"While you may be able to access all these via the Windows 10 Settings app, the Registry Editor or the Group Policy Editor, Ultimate Windows Tweaker makes things easier for you by offering all useful tweaks from its single UI".

So Ultimate Tweaker doesn't really add function only convenience ?

For those who are still fighting this, thought I'd let you know that even after the massive Win10 Update this month, WinAero 3.2 worked beautifully to eliminate the shortcut arrows and they remain eliminated after rebooting.
