Do you have any idea why I ".zip" is not listed in my "choose default apps by file type"after updating to Windows 10? I have had issues extracting some zip files from one source - but others work -- since updating to Windows 10 and in the process of checking file associations I see that I do not have .zip listed (though do have .z listed). Don't know how to get it listed such that I can check/control the .zip associations. Thanks for any help!

Hello CherylA, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

The .zip file extension is not listed by default.

Other than opening a .zip file to see what app (ex: File Explorer) opens it, you can right click on the .zip file, click/tap on "Open with", click/tap on "Choose another app", and see what app it has to keep using.

Thanks, Brink ,for the quick response. I have seen many sites, however, that indicate öne can "Go to your Settings for your computer, and choose CHOOSE DEFAULT APPS BY FILE TYPE, scroll down to .zip and select Windows Explorer, then you're all set." ".zip" is a common extension that one can usually use associate to an app via settings and I think it is exceptional that ".zip" is not in my list, when I see screenshots at other sites showing it typically is listed. ??

Not sure why the suggested that there either since .zip is not listed by default. The easiest way is to use the "Open with" context menu to change the association for .zip.

Not to pester you, but it is inconvenient to "open with" every single time, and I remain quite perplexed why every other possible file extension appears to be listed in "Settings/System/Default apps/CHOOSE DEFAULT APPS BY FILE TYPE" but not .zip. It has always been possible prior to Windows 10 to associate ANY file extension with a default program. I'm not sure what you mean by ".zip is not listed by default." How else would one permanently associate a program with a file extension? The link I gave you, provided again below, as well as others I could find - indicates that that other people have .zip listed in their file type listings. Have you checked your listings available at location I've specified above? I have ... .yps, .z, .z96... and no .zip. Do you not see a .zip extension either but see essentially all others? It's no bother at all. :)

What I mean is that Windows 10 does not have .zip listed in OPTION FOUR and OPTION SEVEN below to be able to select a default app for.

You'll need to use another option to set a default app for .zip files instead.
