Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10  

Hi Brink,

First thank you for this very useful tutorial! I regularly have to help persons sort out file associations and have been waiting for the first request to fix thing on a WIN 10 machine. I now know exactly where to go to find a solution.

I have a question please which may be related.

When running the reliability monitor, the display generates a view of the data that is most useful. I started saving reliability monitor outputs and I notice these are saved as [.XML] files, which then opens by default in IE. How can one display these saved reliability files using the internal display as used by WIN 10 instead?

On the list in this tutorial, the default for [.XML] is Internet Explorer and the only options available are XML, IE, etc. I presume this would be another one of the "unknown apps" used internally.

That's correct. XML files do not have an association set to them by default. You can use any browser or text editor to open an .xml file with.

I've added CSS to the tutorial.

PHP is not associated by default, but the .reg file below will unassociate it for you.

unassociate_PHP.reg

You could change the file extension in the .reg file above if you want to unassociate JS files, but JS has a default association that you can download from the tutorial instead. :)

Thanks for the reply and I understand that point. What I am trying to get back to is when one accesses the "reliability monitor", the results are displayed on screen in a format/display that is internal to Windows. See example.



If one clicks on the link at the bottom right, that display is saved "as is" and can be accessed at a later stage in exactly the same format/display as is generated by Windows.

BUT, the moment one accesses that file using any .XML reader/browser, saved Reliability reports are not displayed in the original format anymore.

I want to be able to go back and only access saved reliability reports in the original internal format/display, and not using a .XML reader.

Do you know how or what Windows uses to compile/display the reports in their original format?

See if also downloading and merging the .reg file for the listed Directory item as well may help.

If not, then you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to undo it.
