I believe the Group Policy is working because my PC last checked for updates days ago whereas it would check at least once per day without the GP. However, I believe we need to submit feedback to Microsoft that there needs to be visual confirmation so we don't wonder.
Hi...like I mentioned to Ten Forward you should be getting regular Defender updates each day with 'Notifications' before .. all five of my systems work that way.

Well, mine isn't. Mine hasn't checked for updates in several days according to the Settings app. Before the GP, it was checking at least once -- usually more than once -- per day.

Hi...well then change the group policy settings to the way it was before if you want and see what happens....and restart computer....then after checking everything...go into Group policy and change the 'Update' settings for 'Enable' again ...it should start working right away or maybe a little time afterwards ...we don't know your system and what exactly you did or what is going on...just reporting the way it is supposed to work and it does for me...you did a clean install or just upgraded to 14393.?
If Group policy is set correctly to 'Notify when updates arrive and not to download" then all you should get is a ' System Notification' before.... BTWAY do you have your 'Sound' settings for 'Notifications' set?

I can confirm the policy is still working fine, despite no visual confirmation on the update page of the settings.

I just got a notification about updates and this is what I see, no auto downloading, it's waiting for me to take action.

@ SmileyPK, if it isn't checking daily, then something's not right. On my setup it was still checking daily. And now, notification and prompt to install.

Hi...When did you receive that cumulative update?....my 10586 has not even gotten the anniversary upgrade 14393 yet....but all my Insider systems are up to date.

I got that update a couple of hours ago.

I didn't get the anniversary update normally. Even manual override would not work, failed with an error, 0x80004005 I believe, so I did a fresh install, which I was planning to do anyway. Everything working fine now.

I'm not sure I follow. If you disable automatic updates, it should definitely not check every day. Why would it check every day if it can't install updates?

Yes it does check everyday and thru out the day as long as you are on the computer....but will not download any updates untill You allow them....first it will give you a 'Notification' that 'Updates ' are available.... then you decide when to let them download...if you did the GPEDIT.MSC properly as displayed at the beginning of this thread and also I posted a picture in my previous posting.
If you manually check for updates then it will download and install them immediately unless it is a large update then it will set a time to install and then you still have the option to change the time of installation or restart computer and continue with the update/upgrade.
