    *I posted this here because it seems to fall right inline with this tutorial. Let me know if I should post this elsewhere.

    I've been following this thread, among others, but I've gotten to the point where I'm scratching my head. Hoping someone here can give me the next steps. This computer is only 1-2 months old, was running fine, then a windows update screwed it up.

    Timeline (The Important Steps I've Taken)
    -Problem started with a windows update on Thurs Dec 3.
    -After the update, Start Menu, Search Bar, Windows Update, Action Bar, Windows Settings, etc stopped working.
    -Attempted everything in this tutorial.
    *Created new admin user. Same problems.
    *SFC scan reported problems but it could not resolve.
    *CheckHealth failed to run
    *RestoreHealth Online failed.
    *RestoreHealth Local, referenced to 'install.wim' within the mounted TechBench Win 10 iso failed.
    -Used the setup within the Mounted TechBench Win 10 iso to reinstall Windows 10 (Kept Files)

    This is where things got confusing for me. After the in-place refresh, I still have the same original problems BUT:
    -SFC reports no problems.
    -CheckHealth and ScanHealth report no problems.
    -Can't open settings through the Action Center. Using (ms-settings:display) returns "The application cannot be started. Try reinstalling..."
    -I again, ran DISM RestoreHealth Local, referenced to the TechBench Win 10 iso. Which is successful, but all the original problems remain.
    -SFC still reports no problems.

    I have searched for a solution and attempted everything I can find. I cannot access windows update on this computer and I am unsure what to do next.

    Ideas?

    (Ryjax, you would get better help if you started your own new thread, rather than tag your problem to the end of a tutorial. If you have ruled out component store and system file problems, then a registry problem may just be the cause? Just a suggestion, and Welcome to Tenforums.)


    It is difficult to know which index to use, when there are a variety of forms of ESD and WIM in use.
    I would suggest checking using 7-Zip if you are having difficulties finding the source. I recommend using the latest stable version (currently 15.12) or latest beta - they are usually stable enough for everyday use.

    The [1].xml file (opens in IE11 by default) shows the (machine readable) xml descriptions of the 5 images in this x64 ESD download, and it is clear that only images 4 and 5 correspond to Pro and Core editions - image 1 is Windows Setup files and 2 and 3 are WinPE images - presumably for installation and recovery.

    In this case, the DISM command fpr a Pro system would be:

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:esd:d:\installx64.esd:4 /limitaccess

    whereas the attempt to use the image 1 would result in a source not found error.

    Hello and Happy New Year to everyone.

    This is my first post on the forums.

    I had the same problem with sfc /scannow and DISM /RestoreHealth using the /Source part. I tried everything I read here and on other forums.Mounting the ISO to a USB stick, using either .wmi or .esd depending on the ISO, extracting install.esd with 7zip and pointing to the correct folder.

    The only solution I managed was through downloading the TechBench iso. After pointing /source to that mounted ISO everything worked like a charm, DISM was able to complete the operation and sfc /scannow managed to correct every corruption it found.

    So a big thanks to everyone here taking their time to help us , the less knowledgeable in the use of Windows.

    Help please!
    I ran the CheckHealth and ScanHealth, both said ImageHealthState: Repairable
    Therefore, I went on to step 5 and did a RestoreHealth but it has been Running for hours now and I don't know what to do.
    Is that normal? Should I just leave it to run or is there a way to stop it?

    Hello Levy,

    Yes, it could take a while to finish. As long as you have hard drive activity, it's best to let it sit and finish.

    If Dism found issues with the component store and says it's repairable, then it means that /RestoreHealth should be able to fix it.

    HI brink i was doing this command as cortana keeps turning off, figured maybe something was a miss, i did this one Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth but its just sitting on a blinking cursor no status count any ideas?

    You could try restarting the computer and running the command again to see if it may run properly afterwards.
