How to Add or Remove "Turn off display" cascading context menu in Windows

By default in Windows, you can set to automatically turn off the display after being idle for a specified amount of minutes.

When the display turns off, you would just need to move the mouse, touch the touchpad or touchscreen, click a mouse or touchpad button, or press a key for the display to turn back on.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove a Turn off display desktop context menu that will let users Turn off display or Lock computer and Turn off display on demand in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

While you must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove the "Turn off display" context menu, all users will be able to use the context menu.

Shawn, it may not be an issue with everyone, but the Nircmd can sometimes remain in memory after execution of the command, and cause the display to turn back on or cause other issues, when using the default parms:

"nircmd.exe cmdwait 1000 monitor off" will execute synchronously.

From the Nirsoft site (full help http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd2.html#using):
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changes the state of the display monitor. The [action] parameter may contain the following values:
    • off: Turn off the monitor
    • async_off: Turn off the monitor. Use this value if NirCmd remains in memory when using monitor off.
    • on: Turn on the monitor
    • low: Set the monitor to low power state.

This command only works in systems that support this feature. If you have a problem that NirCmd remains in memory when using this command, you may try to use async_off, async_on and async_low actions instead of on/off/low actions.
    Examples:
    monitor off
    monitor on
    monitor async_off
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"nircmd.exe cmdwait 1000 monitor async_off" will execute asynchronously.

I've used this for years and found the async tweak avoids the problem.

Thank you TC. I have updated the tutorial to use "async_off" in the command instead to avoid that issue for some. :)
