No, sorry - my wrong terminology!
I meant the 'pretty picture' screen which Windows displays almost immediately after starting - the one which gives all the accounts at bottom-left after you press Esc...

Currently this screen stays displayed for minutes and hours, until someone logs in.

That would be the sign-in screen.

Usually, you will see the lock screen first. When you dismiss the lock screen, you will then see the sign-in screen. If you stay idle on the sign-in screen, it should go back to the lock screen after a minute by default. I believe the usual "turn off display after" setting is what's used for what you want.

Change Turn off Display after Time in Windows 10

The "Console lock display off timeout" setting in this tutorial on the first page is to set how long to wait idle with no activity while on the lock screen when a user locks the computer before timing out and automatically turning off the display.

    Hello Shawn

The sequence of screens I see on our PCs after power-on / WoL is:
    1. BIOS screen showing manufacturer and other details, displayed briefly
    2. Windows symbol in cyan on a dark background, displayed briefly
    3. Lock screen containing a picture, with time and date at the bottom left-hand side, displayed until user action
    4. Signon screen, which results from user pressing Esc key

My testing indicates that you are quite right (!) in your statement that the Lock Screen timeout applies both to the initial Lock screen (as 3, above) and also after someone has logged on, and leaves the PC idle for a period of time.

I was hoping for a registry setting which applied only to the initial Lock screen, before someone signed on, and not after they had signed on. Somehow I doubt that this is available, unfortunately.

    Thanks for your expert help!

    @JohnGray,

Did changing the "Turn off display" setting to what you want affect the initial Lock screen?

Hi Shawn. Ive just started to use Windows Power Saving using the default settings (Screen to power down after 10 minutes and PC to go to Sleep after 30 minutes).
I use my Microsoft Account to sign in to my PC. When it boots I get the Dell splash screen followed by the Lock Screen. If I do nothing and I leave my PC idle, after one minute the screen goes black. Is that the way it should work? If I move my mouse on this lock screen it then brings up the sign in screen where if I do nothing, after several seconds it reverts back to the lock screen and again after one minute the monitor powers down and the screen goes black.
Does the 10 minute default power off setting for the Screen, which works fine when using my PC in Windows, only apply after you've signed into Windows?
When first turning on the PC, Is the one minute Screen power down after no activity on the Lock Screen normal behaviour?
Ive always changed the Screen and Sleep settings to Never power down in the past. Was it normal that the Lock screen seen at boot up was never interrupted with a black screen no matter how long the PC was idle?.. because that was my experience with the Power Settings set to Never

    Hello sportsfan148,

One minute is the default setting for the Console lock display off timeout setting.

The Turn off display after setting only applies when you are signed in.

Thanks for clearing that up Shawn. Ive always changed the Screen and Sleep settings to Never power down in the past. I haven't tested in a while to confirm if that changed, but it used to be what I posted above.

Im not sure I understand what you mean.
Do you have to be using Windows Power Saving (i.e not have the settings set to Never) in order for the one minute Console lock display off timeout setting to apply to that initial Lock Screen that you see before the sign in screen when you first turn on the PC?

They are separate independent settings unless something has changed that I haven't had time to test yet.
