How to Remove PIN from your Account in Windows 10

Windows Hello in Windows 10 enables users to sign in to their device using a PIN (Personal Identification Number). You can use this PIN to sign in to Windows, apps, and services.

One important difference between a password and a Hello PIN is that the PIN is tied to the specific device on which it was set up. That PIN is useless to anyone without that specific hardware. Someone who steals your password can sign in to your account from anywhere, but if they steal your PIN, they'd have to steal your physical device too!

Even you can't use that PIN anywhere except on that specific device. If you want to sign in on multiple devices, you have to set up Hello on each device.

For more information about PIN, see: Why a PIN is better than a password (Windows 10)

When you sign in to Windows 10 with PIN, you only need to type your PIN number without pressing Enter.

Luckily for those who no longer want to use a PIN there is an easy and fast workaround to completely remove the PIN. This short tutorial will show you how to do it.

    Here's How:

1 Open the Settings app, and click/tap on the Accounts icon.

2 Click/tap on Sign-in options on the left side, click/tap on Windows Hello PIN on the right side, and click/tap on the Remove button. (see screenshot below)

The Remove button will be grayed out if this is for a Microsoft account and you have turned on Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts. To enable the Remove button, you will need to turn off Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts, and refresh the "Sign-in options" page in Settings.

3 Click/tap on Remove to confirm. (see screenshot below)

4 Type in your account's password to verify, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

    That's it. Fast & easy :).

Wow. Never in my dreams I could think of clicking the Cancel button to remove the PIN. I have been looking for an option to remove the PIN sign in since last 20 minutes. Thanks Kari. Great tutorial. :)

I am having a similar issue except the PIN only shows up when I open browser to facebook. I don't have PIN show up for anything else. I followed your outline how to remove it but it does not have a Remove PIN phrase next to create PIN. Any other suggestions?

Hello Jambolias, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

It doesn't sound like the PIN you are seeing when you open the browser to Facebook may be for this. Could you post a screenshot showing this to see if it may or not?

I guess you have an HP computer, that looks like the HP SimplePass PIN pad, nothing to do with Windows. See this thread: PIN issue I can't resolve via Google articles -- advice welcome! - - Windows 10 Forums

HP SimplePass support page, scroll down the page for removal instructions ("Deleting or modifying your HP SimplePass", quite bottom of the page): HP Support document - HP Support Center

The option 'Remove' is grayed out for some (or all?) users, who have set a PIN. A network admin had enabled Windows Hello in Azure. Then, some users didn't see the option to skip the option to set a PIN. (This is an interface problem at the side of Microsoft.) So, some users have set a PIN. Then, the network admin disabled Windows Hello, because users didn't want to use a PIN. After the disabling of Windows Hello, some (or all?) users who had set a PIN, still have the option to use Windows Hello, and the option to remove PIN is grayed out. It sounds like a bug to me, for some specific situations.

I have an ACER Aspire, I tried the above but the "disable HELLO" option is not present. I followed the above steps, but after confirming "remove", I am bounced back to the "first we need to verify who you are, please enter your PIN" screen and I am told to reset the computer to try again. Here is the screenshot showing (or not showing an agreeable remove button).

I think I missed a step in that tutorial. Two pictures were supposed to appear.

    Removed HELLO

Don't know why on my end there was no confirmation that screenshots transmitted.
Anyway, the second screenshot was the start of the loop I would get stuck in, especially at the PIN stage. The only PIN I had was that which I used to access my device, and that wasn't accepted. This is past now as I did a factory reset of laptop, and on its reload I hope I've eliminated HELLO.

    HI Kari,
I would give you a thumbs up but can't find the picture button.
Thank you for the hint in your reply that PINs are associated with the device used for setting up that program.
After I did the factory reset. I returned to an earlier laptop (I never throw out devices) and did as you suggested and as you described up popped the appropriate buttons. The PIN that I had for a few years had been set on an old Toshiba and thus did not work on the current ACER.
