How to Add or Delete Accounts in Mail app in Windows 10

The Mail and Calendar apps included with Windows 10 help you stay up to date on your email, manage your schedule and stay in touch with people you care about the most. Designed for both work and home, these apps help you communicate quickly and focus on what’s important across all your accounts. Supports Office 365, Exchange, Outlook.com, Gmail, Yahoo! and other popular accounts.

If you don't want to continue to receive email from a particular account in the Mail app for Windows 10, you can either delete the account and remove it from the app, or you can turn off email for that account. Deleting or removing an account from either app will also remove any calendar associated with that account. Turning off email for an account will only temporarily remove the account from the app until email is turned back on for the account.

When you add or remove accounts in your Mail app, the account will also automatically be added or removed from your Calendar app.

This tutorial will show you how to add or delete email accounts in the Mail app for your account in Windows 10.

    Oh for pete's sake

OK, two major problems with this tutorial.

    1. Mail App looks like the first screenshot ONLY if you have already loaded at least one email account. If you haven't, you have exactly two options: Add new account, or cancel. You see none of the buttons shown. This can be pretty confusing for someone who is doing this for the first time - I thought I was in a parallel universe where my Windows 10 worked differently from yours. I even checked the date of your post to see if maybe you had based this on a pre-release version of 10 or something. Nope...

Anyhow I worked it out. So this super simple new App that makes everything so much easier, requires me to create a new bogus GMail account just so I can configure it in W10Mail and get access to the screen you saw. OK, No Prob, he said, gritting his teeth at 10:30 p.m. Create the damn acount. Log on. Configure it to allow POP3 and IMAP. Fine.

Configured the Gmail account in Mail app. Cool & groovy. NOW I have the "gear icon" setting button and I can access all the screens referred to in your steps above. Yay.

    2. But, then, the other major factual inexactitude with the tutorial: You CAN'T add just any old Internet email address like you could with OLE, Windows Mail, or Windows Essentials Live Mail. If you want to add a POP3 or IMAP account, and Microsoft doesn't recognise its domain settings, sorry pal, you're sh!t outa luck.

You can try. Click "Gear" -> Accounts -> Add account -> Other account. Just as when there were no accounts already configured, the choices now (after entering your mail address & password) are [Cancel] or [Sign-in]. If you click Sign-in (and yes, that hyphen IS wrong, but Microsoft put it there) and the DNS auto-discovery settings are not set up, then the response is "We couldn't find info for that account. Make sure that the email address is correct and then try again". So it was a pretty pointless exercise finding out the POP3 and SMTP server addresses, then, wasn't it? And creating the Gmail account, and going through all that aggravation. SO, thanks, Microsoft, and thanks Ten Forums, there's one evening I'll never get back.

Edit: in frustration, and not really thinking anything would change, I kept hitting that [Sign-in] button. And kept getting the error message about not being able to find info for that account. And then all of sudden on about the 5th attempt it started prompting for POP3 & SMTP server names! Hey, way to go, Microsoft, that was about as counter-intuitive as you could get. COME ON, even f&ckin Linux is easier to use than that - how was anyone supposed to deduce that repeatedly trying the same unproductive option would eventually have results? GAAAAAAAAH what a HUGE step backwards.

And talking of. Once the App is open and looking at your email accounts - oh GADDDD how ugly. You can't turn off Reading Pane, even though users have been asking for it for over a decade now (and Microsoft's original security advice was to have it turned off in case viruses were auto-activated by opening mails). You can't configure ANYTHING about the screen to make it more usable, you can't even remove the background picture it imposes on you - I haven't seen anything uglier, except perhaps Windows 2.0 back in 1990-whenever.

So I guess it's back to Windows Live Essentials 2012, buggy though it is.

I want to delete my account from windows mail but I can't because it's the one I log into windows with. Unfortunately, Windows mail thinks it's an outlook email address and it's not, it's a google account. I readded the email as a gmail account and it works fine but I just can't delete the old one, even though both accounts have he same email address at my own domain name! Any ideas?

Hello Keith, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

As a workaround, you could switch your account to a local account, then switch it back to a Microsoft account using the email address you wanted instead. This way the Mail app would use it as well.

Thanks - well its the same email address at my domain it's just that Microsoft thinks it's an outlook address so I have Sync Off in windows mail for that account and the same address added as a gmail address works fine!

Did you add your Google account to Outlook for it to possibly behave that way?

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook/gmail

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...e-windows-8-rt

In addition, if you added the Google account as an alias to your Microsoft account, it could see it as an Outlook account.

    Hope this helps. :)

Well originally my Microsoft account was under a Yahoo address then I added my own domain email as an alias and deleted the Yahoo one. Could that be the cause?

That would be why it's seeing your domain email associated with your Microsoft account, and possibly stuck it with Outlook.

I was trying to think this through then I looked at my friends laptop and her mail account and she has the same problem. She has an email address at "Sbcglobal.net" and that's her MS login and it thinks it's an outlook address too so she has to add her same address to mail as a Yahoo account in order for it to work (Sbcglobal, old AT&T, uses Yahoo mail). So it seems like MS accounts thinks everyone's address is an Outlook email so you have to turn off sync and add the same address under yahoo for it to work. I think it's a WIndows 10 bug now, rather than something I did! Is there a way to tell it what type of email account it is when you add an account or alias? Thanks for all your help by the way.
