    cardnut,

I installed the free IOBit Malware Fighter as a test, and it didn't disable my Windows Defender.

Did you have any malware or virus that may have disabled Windows Defender?

Please post a screenshot showing any message you may get when you try to open Windows Defender to see if it may reveal what may be wrong.

Your screenshot shows that you have Advanced SystemCare Ultimate installed as you current virus protection that will have Windows Defender turned off while installed.

I remember when I first installed Windows 10 that I would get a message saying that WD was not turned on, and it showed IOBit Malware fighter and WD on the list. It was funny cause it showed both were turned off. So if I uninstall Advanced System Care, it should allow me to turn WD on?

If you wanted to uninstall that program, and if it uninstalls properly, WD should be able to be turned back on afterwards.

Once I uninstalled ASC, WD opened right away. Thanks for the help.

Most AV 's will disable WD, Avast AIS did. It also disabled the Windows Firewall as one does not need two AV programs running at the same time and or firewalls. Most say that this is not good. I have zero trust in WD, to me it is akin to the fox guarding the hen house.:)

In the latest testing by AV-Test, Windows Defender did much better. It even beat or was equal to several third party AV's. Equal to Ahn labs and Comodo and better than something called Quick heal. It almost equaled ESET as well. It also got a AA rating from Dennis technology Labs for the first time.
