Some help please.
I just purchased a Sandisk 32GB 3.0 usb to create the image and store on the usb. However the USB drive is not recognised or detected when I attempt to save it to this drive.
I can view the Drive in File explorer > This PC.
Any help please?

The USB will need to have been formatted using NTFS and be at least the same size as the drive(s) you are including in the system image.
32GB would usually not be large enough.

from what I read and what windows states before step is that I need 16gb minimum.

I'm sorry, but I thought you were trying to save a system image to the USB flash drive.
If you are just wanting to create a bootable USB to use to create a system image from instead, then you could also create a Windows 10 installation USB to use.

Basically to clear the confusion, I have just bought a new laptop and want to create a backup of my drive and save it on my usb. However when searching for the usb when its time to save my Sandisk does not populate the list.
i have no issue accessing the drive normally via MY PC.
the only reason I purchased the new usb is for this reason, so i could just put it away and use it if I need to load up windows if i wanted to restore my latop to default as it came.
any reason why i cannot see my usb?

Ok, I understand now. Yeah, the 32GB USB flash drive will not be large enough to save a system image to. It'll need to be at least the same size as the hard drive Windows is installed on.
Hi Subzero, you are slightly confused ( which is why Brink is) , a Recovery Drive is not a copy of windows, so you can put it back , just like from the Factory if you need to, you can allow it to save the files required to do a reset , which may or may not get you back to Factory though.
It is basically a rescue disk for startup issues etc. however most laptop usually have a built in Recovery image to put it back to the Factory State.
Why you'd also want a system image is so it will restore Windows AND all your Programs, music, pics etc. A 1 TB External drive will allow you to do that. I would highly recommend Macrium Reflect Free for that.

A 32Gb drive could well be large enough depending on the actual amount of user files that have been added. If he looks under 'File Explorer' at this 'This PC' then he will know how much space his install is taking (such as less than 25Gb as here).

Yes, 32GB should be plenty to create a recovery drive with, but not for a system image that I thought he was trying to do.
I think it would depend largely on what and how many programs are installed , the sizes for your Libraries (Pics, Music etc) and the level of compression used for the Image.
Using defaults settings in Macrium , using the Backup Windows Wizard my 75GB used C:\ makes a 41GB Image , on my 69GB used C:\ PC , it is making a 39 GB Image currently .
I am not sure if the Windows built in Imaging Software using Compression , so Brink is likely right that at 1:1 , 32GB would be a tight squeeze and you'd only have one Image . Some People these days have Music libraries larger that 32 GB , which is why I tell friends to get something like the WD Passport Drives to use.
