    Hey all,

This no longer seems to work in the latest version of Windows 10; Windows 10 Home, Version: 1511, OS Build: 10586.3
I'm not entirely sure why but I've tried changing the link key value to something other than 00 00 00, restarting windows explorer and then changing the value back, and restarting windows explorer once again and in all cases it still adds the - Shortcut extension text I have also noticed, upon restarting my PC the registry key value is reset to default, I've never known this to happen before... Am I doing something wrong? Because I haven't encountered these issues before this November update.

    Regards

    Hello Wh0pper28, :)

I've updated the .bat files. Please download the new versions, and try again.

Thanks a bunch, as of now it seems to be working. I will try a restart and see whether the registry key value sticks and report back with my results :)

UPDATE: I have just restarted my PC and created a new desktop shortcut, and the registry key value has stuck. That new .bat file works perfectly, thanks Brink much appreciated :)

Hello mirror7, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

This tutorial can't cause an issue with the shortcut arrow overlay. Did you change the shortcut arrow overlay icon below instead of removing the shortcut name extension?

Hmm. The bat file worked, but when I looked in Regedit to manually make the adjustments, I couldn't find this part of the instructions: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\NamingTemplates
    Delete ShortcutNameTemplate string value

There is a subkey under Explorer that has to do with new shortcut handlers, but that wasn't deleted or adjusted after running the bat file. Oh well, the bat file worked. Good enough for me! Thanks much!

Interesting, executing the "turning off bat file" didn't work for me on Windows Ten Pro. Thought it might need reboot, still no success. It did delete the ShortcutNameTemplate string value, but the binary data for link is 1c "00 00 00", not "00 00 00 00".
Edit: Decided to change it manually, reboot and it works fine. That brings an additional question. I never leave the ".exe" in the name either. Is there a way to remove that?

Odd the .bat file did that.

As always (at least previously in Windows 7 forum, recently reading here) I appreciate all of the help in these tutorials.
