Yep, if you're running only on battery, then Fast Startup may not be the best option for battery life since the PC doesn't do a full shutdown. :)

Fast startup (aka: hybrid boot or hybrid shutdown) is turned on by default in Windows and is a setting that helps your PC start up faster after shutdown. Windows does this by saving system info to a file (hiberfil.sys) upon shutdown so when you start your PC again, Windows uses that system info to resume your PC instead of restarting it.

    Powering down

I lost my Fast Start somehow but,as you will see above,I have just got it back thanks to the option 2 above. Both before I lost it and after I lost it my HP laptop would not power down as it used to when running Win 8.1. I don't suppose it will be any different on that score now I've got it back. If you search on this site under 'Power Down' there is one suggestion to try which is getting some good reports. It involves going to the site 'http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and-Software/How-to-Resolve-Post-Windows-10-Upgrade-Issues-on-HP-Laptops/td-p/5209825' but I'm a learner so haven't tried it myself yet.

Hey Brink :) Something I thought you might want to add to this very useful tutorial.
If you only use the hiberboot function and not the actual hibernation function, you might as well run
    Code:
    powercfg /hibernate /type reduced
, as it can reduce the size of hiberfil.sys by a sizable chunk.

    Just my two cents.
    Cheers.

Hello 10userwindows, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Fast boot would be a different setting that fast startup, but I think you meant fast startup.

It appears that your motherboard may not support fast startup.

The error message you got means:

Kernel Power Event ID 41 - TechNet Articles - United States (English) - TechNet Wiki

The kernel power event ID 41 error occurs when the computer is shut down or restarts unexpectedly. When a computer running Windows boots, a check is performed to determine whether the computer was shut down cleanly. If the computer was not shut down cleanly, a Kernel Power Event 41 message is generated.

An event 41 is used to report that something unexpected happened that prevented Windows from shutting down correctly. There may be insufficient information to explicitly define what happened. To determine what may have happened and to identify a potential resolution, it is important to know what state the computer was in at the time just before the event occurred.

i think this answers my question:
    - Fast startup IS dependent on Hibernation [being enabled], however
    - there exists an 'abbreviated' hybernation option...

    fighting slow boot times....

I'm having Fast Startup Problems on my new build. Machine just shuts down as it gets to the windows logo on boot, around maybe 1 in 5 boots.... If i turn off Fast Startup its fine. Never has a problem.

Win 10 Pro 64bit, clean install. Asus Z97-A 3.1, Corsair Vengenace 16GB, 2 SSD,s + 1 HDD. EVGA GTX980 GPU. Installed the Win10 chipset driver from the Asus website and left everything else to Windows to install (apart from the GPU of course)

    Pretty straight forward install.

Want to know the best way to go troubleshooting what part of the initializition is causing the machine to shutdown to OFF, when fast start is on.

What logfiles are created and where are they ?

    Hello thedoc, :)

Usually, you would just leave Fast Startup turned off if it's causing issues.

You might check using the tutorial below to see if the shutdown log may have any details in it that may help.

Thanks, the 1074 really didn't come up with anything other than info

The process C:\Windows\System32\RuntimeBroker.exe (I5-4690K) has initiated the power off of computer I5-4690K on behalf of user I5-4690K\TheDoc46 for the following reason: Other (Unplanned)

and the 6008 (unexpected shutdown) logs came up empty.

Great little tool though, i'll be sure to use it in the future. Thanks Brink.

If anyone has any other suggestions as to why my problem is happening, please chime in.
