That won't work. If you need programs to be set a certain way, you can't do that because you are not supposed to open programs in Audit Mode. If you open some programs in Audit Mode and it copies those settings to default profile, you are going to have problems. We tried your method with Illustrator CS6, and we had a TON of problems because the settings are for Administrator account and not the new user.
I so wholeheartedly wish that people would not state "It won't work!" as a fact when it is so clear that they really do not know. Naturally it does not work if you will do it wrong, naturally you will have problems if you do it wrong.

I have nothing more to say about this topic. Your machines, your decision, you are of course free to do whatever you want to, as you wish, wrong or correct. I have nothing more to say about this topic. I just finish by answering your original question as clear as I can:

Kari, if you go into Audit Mode like you always do, create a new user account, log out of the Administrator account, login to that new user account, customize the account, and then Sysprep it like you always do, do you have the Start and Search problem?
There is no way for me to know if the Start and Search would work in doing as you suggest because I would absolutely not test that in any circumstances. I have no interest in testing something I know to be wrong.

You don't like that I say it won't work even though I have tried it and it doesn't work? Well that is interesting to say the least!

No. I know it works, for 100% sure.

I don't like people saying as a fact that a certain process does not work, when in fact the process in question works absolutely flawless when done correctly. In your case it is quite apparent that it did not work for you because you did not know how to do it correctly. Your statement was invalid and untrue, based on inadequate knowledge.

Check the video I posted, it shows the principle, how app customization is done correctly in Windows Audit Mode. Video uses Windows 7 as an example but it's the same in Windows 8 and 10.

    Most sincere,

Like you I am not going to keep talking because me and coworkers have already tried with Illustrator CS6 and it just does not work. Thanks for all else that you do though! You usually put out really good stuff so I will not hold this one against you!

I should send you a bill for a replacement keyboard, I think I just burned the old one; your post made me laugh uncontrolled and the coffee I was drinking is now all over the keyboard!

You don't hold it against me that I know the process works exactly as I have told you but you don't know how to do it correctly? That must be a joke!

If it does not work for you because you don't know how to do it correctly does not mean that we can say as a fact "It does not work". It's like if I disconnect the HDD on my HP Envy laptop so it can't boot and then state as a fact that "HP Envy laptops do not work".

    Still laughing,

Anyway, I will report back my findings later this week. Feel free to ignore it since you think it's wrong, Kari. :)

That's not true. I don't "think" it's wrong. I know it, have proven it.

There's a correct way to do this and several wrong ways, you have chosen a wrong way rather than try to learn the correct way and that's your right. In your case I would rather try to learn the correct way; in the long run it's better to learn to do stuff as it should be done, but apparently we have different opinion about the importance of learning correct ways. For me it is important.

Due to the constant personal attacks, I was unfortunately forced to add Kari to my ignore list.

For everyone else: I just tried it on 10240 RTM by going into Audit Mode, creating a user, logging out of the Administrator account, logging into the new user account, customizing the account as needed, and running Sysprep with /generalization and /oobe in that new account. Even after Sysprep, the Start menu and Search worked for me in the user account created before Sysprep.

However, because of lack of time, I did not install updates before Sysprep...which I suspect may be a cause of the Start and Search issues.

I also do not have the 10532 ISO with me right now, so I will have to test it later this week.

But for now, RTM seems to work in this scenario...at least for me.

Our conversation yesterday, 6 posts each, that's "constant personal attacks"?

OK, so he's not going to see this because I'm on his ignore list, but you other geeks reading this thread, please go back a few posts and see if "constant personal attacks" is a correct way to describe what happened. Read 12 posts starting from post #155, to post #166. Post #155 here: Windows 10 Image - Customize in Audit Mode with Sysprep - Page 16 - Windows 10 Forums

Those twelve posts put very short:

A user asked my opinion about a procedure, a way to do the customizations for the Windows image. I told I have never tested it like that because it's wrong and pointless and explained the correct procedure, giving clear examples and even posting a video to show the correct way to do this.

I told the user in question that he had failed because it is so apparent from his posts that he did it wrong and does not know the correct way how to do it, and this apparently was enough for this user: he did not like me telling he is wrong and explaining the correct procedure.

Nothing more to say about this, read those twelve posts by yourself and see what you think was said, it only takes a few minutes of your time. Anyway, at least I tried. I told the correct procedure, gave example screenshots from the Windows SIM, example extract of the correct answer file, explained how it should be done and posted a video about how it should be done. All that in those 12 posts, six of them mine six his, within a few hours yesterday, the time period from hereon known as "time of constant personal attacks".

It is kind of sad that people who do not know get upset when it's revealed, rather than say honestly "Ah OK, I did not know that!".

Kari, small question for you (and partially unrelated to the posts above) - during your Windows 10 testing to capture a reference image using Sysprep, an unattend file/copyprofile, etc.. have you managed to configure the start menu so that it is inherited in new user profiles?

Basically, I have been trying to configure my start menu with 9 Office 2010 tiles (3 columns x 3 rows) in one group entitled Microsoft Office in a particular order. I have my copyprofile.xml in Sysprep folder with which I run sysprep on the reference machine with the command: sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown /unattend:c:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\copyprofile.xml prior to capturing the image. The same copyprofile.xml is also being used in the "Use an unattend or Sysprep answer file for a custom installation" step in SCCM 2012 (R2 SP1 CU1) task sequence.

However when the image is deployed, the tiles are not in the order that I have set and Windows seems to have conveniently decided to jumble them up! By any chance, have you encountered this instance? Thanks alot :)
