Here is an article that covers WIMBoot.
Downloading Windows 10 build 9926? Get KB 3034229 ASAPIf you're trying to install the latest Windows 10 build on a Windows 8.1 PC, you may be greeted by the notice "Windows can't be installed because this PC uses a compressed operating system." I got it while trying to put build 9926 on a brand-new Asus Transformer.
The culprit? WIMboot. It's a Microsoft technology that squeezes Windows into a smaller footprint, so Windows can essentially boot from a compressed image. That's great for cheap PCs, but it doesn't play well with the Windows 10 installer. I haven't found any workaround.
Thanks for this tutorial. I will use it tomorrow when I install 9926 x64 on my gaming rig. I just purchased a 500gb Samsung 850 Evo to replace my 128gb Crucial M4. I am hoping that my pc will boot faster when I am done. I built this pc about 3.5 years ago and it takes about 60-90 seconds to boot to the desktop. I think I am using legacy boot mode so I'm planning on changing to UEFI. Do you know if I need to install Intel Rapid Storage or is that only for people that are booting to a hdd? Is there anything else I need to know? Thanks.
Hello aqxea, and welcome to Ten Forums.
If you currently are using legacy BIOS and are going to switch to UEFI, then you'll need to do a clean install instead of an upgrade.

Hi Brink. My apologies. I meant to post this in the Clean install tutorial. That's what I get for staying up so late last night. I bought a new ssd so a clean install is my only option. Thank you for the reply. :)Edit: If it's not against the forum rules, I'll copy my post to the correct forum.
Today I used the mount method for the first time to upgrade from 10041 to 10049 and it was the fastest and most reliable method to date. I have some twenty odd installs behind me(mostly experimenting with drivers. Most were USB setup.exe upgrades and about 6 clean(Boot) installs. But this method, after downloading the ISO, from clicking Mount in File Explorer to a desktop only took about 15 minutes and everything(files, settings, even god Mode) was carried over.
I need to try it a few more times, but I think this'll be the method for my Win 8.1 desktop when the GA(RTM is too early) is out.
For my Win7 laptop I'll use USB ISO method.
Hey Cliff,
Thank you for the feedback.
Were you not able to update to build 10049 from 10041 through Windows Update?
I use mobile broadband (prepaid) and Microsoft has update turned off for metered connections for the Technical Preview, and I cannot hack it(I've gone through the registry about 30 times on 4 different builds). All the settings can be set to data download and download over metered but not for updates. Even Defender can only be updated through the UI but not Windows update. The last 2 ISOs I got through the Mega download were clean and installed well. I guess someone did the ESD trick and uploaded. But I still download to a sandbox and check with Defender, MRT, Malwarebytes.
