Enable AHCI in Windows 8 and Windows 10 after Installation

When I upgraded to W10 last year, I made one change to my desktop. Installing an SSD drive as my primary drive, with an IDE drive as secondary. I wasn't aware of changing BISO to AHCI until sometime after. Since that time I've followed a couple of directions how to take advantage of AHCI in the BIOS thru registry or Safeboot options. But each time I make the change, and after a few days or week, my desktop grinds to a halt. It takes time just to reboot it, and when I do, changing BISO back to IDE fixes the problem.

I can only surmise that installing W10 from scratch, with AHCI active in BIOS, might finally fix the issue.

Any other suggestions are welcome. Thx.

Thanks. I updated the SSD driver via Intel's utility when I installed the drive. It was previously used as an external backup drive with no issues.
Think flashing the BISO to make sure its current/not corrupted would be a positive step? Maybe also reset CMOS and replace the battery? I haven't seen any issues with respect to CMOS.
