Well...when closing down the machine for the night it stated that it was getting updates before powering off. The next morning when powered up it started a lengthy update process which I expected to fail...at about 4pm it completed everything and rebooted...whereupon I checked with msinfo32 and found that I had version 10.0.10586 and the user profiles were still on F:\ where I had moved them. So far all seems well, so go figure?

Going back to post #705 in this thread I asked you about this plan

1) move the users as in step 2 - but don't worry about deactivating first
2) After the move, create a local user account with my desired name of "Dave"
3) Then I can make the "Dave" account a MS Account (**** now do I do that??? *****)
4) Then move the files from the old (doher) account to the new (Dave) account
5) Delete the old (doher) account
6) Do I need to do anything with Users\Public (it looks like it has no user associated with it so it just work as normal??)


Well I still have not moved the users to another drive yet and had to install a bunch of programs to get some work done. But I still want to do it. I waited partly to get the anniversary update behind me and also that one guy that could not install an update (a few days ago)

I notice now that I've been using the system for a while and installing programs, my "C:\Users\doher\AppData" has lots of stuff in it. As I mentioned I REALLY want to get away from the "doher" as a user location and use "Dave" which I've been using since Windows had the concept of users! In addition to this info in AppData, I see now that the registry has a fair amount of references to the "C:\Users\doher" path.

Here are my new questions...

Q1: In step 5 I mention deleting the "doher" account. I'm thinking now I can't do that now with AppData and Registry references to it? Right?

Q2: If I follow this procedure (including de-registering then re-registering the user accounts - does that take care of all the "C:\Users\doher" references in the registry?

Q3: Depending on what you say about Q1 and Q2, should the new procedure be this?

Q4: (Not exactly related but sort of): In many of my documents I reference other documents. For example in my document about how to do my backups, I'll say "See the document "Backup Tracking" to record the backup details. And "Backup Tracking" is a hyperlink to another document 0 for example the hyperlink might point to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Dave\My Documents\Tracking\Backup Tracking.xlsx
You can see my issue - moving users or not - all those links are broken in Windows 10. Is there some way I could redirect any calls to
C:\Documents and Settings\Dave\My Documents
to
D:\Users\Dave\Documents
Is there a better way to reference other documents or folders in documents?

bug confirmed even relocating post installation... for non english users better to wait...

However, is there a way to relocate Users folder without using a windows 10 setup DVD?
I have a tablet with dual preinstalled OS (Android and Windows 10) and I want to relocate Users folder to an SD card (D: ) as I am running out of space at the internal storage drive (C: ).

Everything is good, except KB3172985 has repeatedly failed to install. Each time, after a restart the installation begins but then gives the Fatal Error C00000D4, restarts, and rolls back the update. . . the Windows Installer terminates when it fails to write the desktop.ini file to the Users folder on the D: drive.

After having trouble installing the KB3172985 update, I applied the Anniversary Update using an in-place upgrade from ISO. KB3176495 installed without a hitch, so hopefully it's smooth sailing from now on.

anniversary update, another bug i read about. i haven't experienced it but, occasionally, people relocating users/data folders could have the pc crashing. ms recomend to run in safe mode or don't relocate (obiously)... waiting for a fix
