Here's another option for "Recent Folders below. Hopefully it may work better for you. :)

    1) Copy and paste the path below into the address bar of File Explorer.

    shell:::{22877a6d-37a1-461a-91b0-dbda5aaebc99}

    2) Drag and drop the "Recent folders" icon in the address bar to your desktop to create a shortcut, and save the shortcut where you like.

    3) Right click on the shortcut, and "Pin to Quick access".

You could open the folder below to "Pin to Quick access" the Recent Items folder to help. It's not the same as only Recent Folders, but does include them.

    %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows
but this still doesn't show up when I'm trying to save a file! Is there no way to do that?!

Recent Folders is not really a valid place to save something to.

In your "Save as" screenshot below, it has a "Recent folders folder" listed. Is that this folder?

    No. I'm attaching a screen shot of Recent Folders location in Quick Access, which I created by using a tip from this forum. I created a shortcut containing this: %windir%\explorer.exe shell:::{22877a6d-37a1-461a-91b0-dbda5aaebc99}
But, I repeat, this does not appear whenever I try to do any kind of "save as" operation---from any program....Word, IE, Excel, Acrobat.
It also didn't appear when I went to browse for the screen capture file I've uploaded. It seems like any file operation "on the fly" fails to see this Recent Folders thing.

Thank you for clearing that up.

You're not able to directly save into the "Recent folders" folder since it's only serves to show you the most recently opened folders instead. This is why it doesn't show in the "Save as" dialog.

Well, I still don't get why...but I guess I can stop wasting time. In Win 7 I could easily navigate to any of the recent folders to which I'd saved a file. Now I have additional clicks to find those locations. Seems like a huge time-wasting step backward. Thanks.

I suppose you could "Pin to Quick access" any of those folders you wanted to be able to save to as a workaround.

Yeah, if I could anticipate every folder I might want to return to one day soon I suppose I could pin them to QA. Ruins the whole idea of the system "remembering" where I've been, doesn't it?

Making "Recent Folders" available from "Save As" in W10u

I successfully used this procedure to get Recent Folders to work in Save As dialog boxes in Win10.
It's a bit of a slog, but a major timesaver.
Do NOT attempt this if not THOROUGHLY acquainted with changing multiple registry entries.

First get the shortcut pinned to the Quick Access menu, either by the methods earlier in the thread, or if they don't work, try this:

    A) Navigate to C:\Users\<username>
    B) Open the folder “Links”
    C) RMB on “Recent Folders” and choose “Pin to Quick Access”
    D) Drag “ Recent folders” to any position under Quick Access

    1) Switch to Administrator sign-in; Perform a System Restore point backup of C drive prior to starting

    2) Check “ Recent folders” appears under Quick Access

    3) Open the Registry (regedit.exe) with Administrator privileges

    4) Navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{22877a6d-37a1-461a-91b0-dbda5aaebc99}\ShellFolder

    5) Right-click ShellFolder and select Permissions

    6) Click Advanced

    7) At the top, click Change

    8) Type in your current username, and then click Check Names

    9) Click OK and then OK (this gives the current user ownership of that Registry Key, permitting the following to happen)

    10) Within the "Group or user names:" section, select Administrators so that it is highlighted blue

    11) Tick the box corresponding to Allow Full Control

    12) Click OK to close the Permissions box

    13) On the right side of the Registry Editor, now double-click "Attributes"

    14) Replace the existing Hexadecimal number of 20040000 with 70010020 and then press OK

    15) Now navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{22877a6d-37a1-461a-91b0-dbda5aaebc99}\ShellFolder

    16) Repeat steps 5 to 14 once again but this time for this particular ShellFolder registry key

    17) Close the Registry Editor

Now all Windows 10 software applications should allow you to Save As in "Recent Folders" under the Quick Access menu.

thanks to "thePhinx" for most of this info
