Hope not offtopic, but I was wondering whether I could use that Tutorial also for the following scenario:
My work notebook, domain-joined needed literally 4 hours until it showed my Windows 10 screen and another 4 hours to show the login screen.
I am with the office notebook still on Build 1511, so now was wondering whether could make an in-place upgrade from Build 1511 to 1607 get also the problem solved.
I tried already with a USB disk to have the safe mode enabled, disabled services, made a system restore to August 28, but nothing helped.

    Cheers

    Hello Tom, :)

Yes, you can do a repair install with installation media that is newer than your currently installed build, and have the new build installed afterwards without losing anything. Be sure that you select to "Keep everything" during the process though.

I would always recommend to back up anything that you don't want to lose to be safe.

Thank you, the HDD is divided into 2 partitions, so the important data is saved to Drive D:

    Cheers
    Tom

Edit: Just noticed "Secure Boot" has to be disabled.
Either I disable it and wait another hours to have Windows booted or I bite the bullet

2nd edit: went the safe way, disabled Secure Boot, even it meant waiting few more hours until it boots complete, had to update Kaspersky to be compliant with the Anniversary Build and then all worked out. Thanks

Thank you very much for this thread, Brink. I performed a repair install of my Windows 10 with an in-place upgrade. I renamed my Windows.old folder, which has kept me from updating the Windows 10 version, and made out an upgrade using Windows Media Creation Tool. Now, I am using the Anniversary Update. :)

Do I need to extract the files to a DVD or USB or can I extract them to the Desktop and run it from there?

    Hello Josh, :)

You could just mount the ISO, and run setup.exe that way if you like. Step 4 can give you more details.

Many thanks Brink for this excellent set of instructions. I was very happy to find this and followed the all of the instructions to the letter. The greatest time consumption was creating a fresh system image before starting everything.

As far as I can tell everything stayed in place perfectly and the system is running a *LOT* faster. I very much appreciate the effort taken to produce and test this.

Hi Shawn- would it be possible to add an instruction to the tutorial to cover the case where the user has a build prior to the current one? E.g. directing them to
Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool

or whatever may be most appropriate? Thanks!
