    Results of refresh:
Win 10 still does not boot unless I rebuild Bcd.
    Solution:
    disabled 'fast boot' in bios.

Everything works fine now, but I get a weird 3 second beep when I boot up my GA-Z68X-UD4-B3.
Re-seated all hardware and ram, beep is still long.

Here is what I think the issue was.
My original SSD failed, corrupting the part of the drive where the MBR lives.
When the new SSD was cloned from the original, it migrated the bad MBR.
I did a win 10 refresh to no effect.
A rebuild of the bcd, fixmbr and fixboot worked on the new ssd, but not permanently and would only boot once, then I'd have to do it again just to get win 10 to boot each time...
...until after I disabled fast boot in the bios, then Windows booted up consistently.

I'm not 100% sure why it only boots with fast boot disabled, but it boots, and quick too. 19 seconds from beep to desktop.

When I decide to do a clean install, I'll let you all know if the thing boots with a normal beep, and with fast boot enables... otherwise it works well at the moment, and I will leave it as such.

    Thanks for all the replies!

Im getting an "Failed to install Msi package" along with error 0x80070643 when trying to install 3Dmark. Ive tried a bunch of solutions but none of them work. Im wondering if this would work. I was running the regular 10 os of 1151 then i joined the insider program to try to see if another build worked. Upgraded to 1607 but problem is still there. Would this repair install work? How do i even get an iso of my build since i got it from windows update and as far i know, windows hasnt released this build in iso.

Hello chuy, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

While it won't hurt to try a repair install, I'm not sure if it will help if it's only an issue with 3Dmark.

If you like, create a new thread in the Software and Apps forum area to see if we may be able to help with this issue there.

Can I use the original MS supplied DVD?

Some system files are corrupted, presumably by a virus attack which has been only partly removed, in both the working and cached files.
Loading from the original, presumably clean, OS DVD seems preferable. But the tutorial suggests using a second hand substitute.
How should this DVD be used and identified as the source?

Hello cvhManchester, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

If you're wanting to do a repair install, you need installation media that is at least the same build and edition of Windows 10 you currently have installed.

Step 3 can show you how to get installation media from Microsoft though.

Thanks for this tutorial. I just used it to perform an inplace repair using the ISO method. Thanks.

    @Brink

Can I use an ISO to do a repair install of Windows 10 Home (Build 10586.494) on my HP ENVY laptop?

The OS is an OEM version with software customization by HP. Can the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool be used in my case and would I lose any customization(s) provided by HP in the process?

A repair install ONLY makes changes to system(OS) files, not drivers, not 3rd party software, not customizations. So you'll be good. This is my preferred 1st got to, after, trying a restart, if I mess something up.
That I have a copy of the ISO in Documents, it's on my SSD, so it only takes a several minutes to repair my system(letting it search for updates is what takes the longest).
