    Charlie,

In that case, reset Windows Update to see if you are able to check for and install updates afterwards.

Just want to make sure again...

If I do this "repair install" to fix icons that are missing in my start menu, it won't delete any picture/music/video files or app installed I have originally on my computer?

I just need to 100% make sure it won't happen. 'Cause if it does, then I'll be screwed and it will be very very hard to get them back.
That's one of the things like about the ISO download and burn to disc, is it allows you to repair reinstall windows and not remove my installed programs.

It took 2 reboots after applying the reset bat.

First try, it cleared history before reboot then reapplied history after reboot. Before rebooting the "Retry" message in updates ended with the code: 0x800705b4.

Second try, the bat ran more thoroughly clearing history "before" and "after" reboot.

Ran check for updates with both 1511 and defender downloading updates with defender updating successfully and 1511 failed to install in the update history, this time there was no number or code in the "retry" message.

Those were the only two messages in the update history.

Sorry it takes me so long to do things.

That's ok. Keep trying to update off and on today to see if it may eventually successfully update.

    OK, will do.

Just finished cleaning, optimizing and rebooting. I do this "everyday", to keep top performance.

I'll do this each and every time I try to update to 1511 and let you know by end of tomorrow.

    Thanks for your help, Charlie

So did the "repair install" and everything is back to normal.

But what if it something like this happens again, I have to do the "repair install" again?

    Great news Theresa.

Hopefully, Microsoft will get the PowerShell command fix for apps corrected to avoid it happening again. :)

    Hi Shawn,

Over the past 24 hours I tried Windows Update 20 times with 5 successful Defender updates to the current 7574 version, but had 20 failed attempts for the 1511 update.

Cleaned, optimized and rebooted 5 times.

Re-tried the 1511 - ISO Disc Image File plus the ISO Media Creation Tool, with each error box stating: "Setup Couldn't Start Properly", even though I know you said, "Like Kind Reinstall".

Is there an original 10240 Repair and Reinstall available?

    Thanks, Charlie

    Charlie,

You might consider doing a clean install to the latest build instead.
