How to Extract Icon from File in Windows

You can use the free IconViewer utility program to view and save the icons contained within files, such as executable files and dynamic link libraries (DLLs).

When IconViewer is installed, it will add an Icons tab to the properties page of any file that contain icons.

While you must be signed in as an administrator to install IconViewer, all users will be able to use the Icons tab in the properties page of files that contain icons.

This tutorial will show you how to extract icons from files to save as a ICO, BMP, or PNG file in Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11.

    Here's How:

1 If you haven't already, you will need to download and install the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) version of IconViewer for your 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) Windows. (see screenshot below)
2 Right click on the file (ex: "imageres.dll") you want to extract (save) an icon from, and click/tap on Properties. (see screenshot below)

3 Perform the following actions: (see screenshot below)

    1) Click/tap on the Icons tab.

    2) Select an available icon you want to extract and save.

    3) Select an available pixel size (ex: "256x256") and bit quality (ex: "32-bit") you want for the select icon in Device images.

    4) Click/tap on the Save (floppy disk) icon.

    2) Enter a file name you want for the icon file.

    3) Select the Icon (*.ico), Bitmap Image (*.bmp), or PNG image (*.png) file type you want to save the icon file as.

    4) Click/tap on the Save button.

Hi, just wondering- did you note this:
While you must be signed in as an administrator to install IconViewer, all users will be able to use the Icons tab in the properties page of files that contain icons.
It works for me when a file I select does contain icons e.g. shell32.dll. As stated in the tutorial, the tab is not present if the file contains no icons. I've not rigorously tested that.

(Note I did install as admin and with appropriate compatibility set, and am using build 1903).

    donnje,

Have you tried, for example, C:\Windows\SystemResources\imageres.dll.mun?

That should show you the same icons that your other utility showed you for C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll or that you could see when selecting an icon for a shortcut in this dialog

If I want to extract icons, I have to decide which size & which colour bitness to extract.

I have not had to face this question before because I have just assigned shortcuts with icons from the likes of C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll and have just let Windows do whatever it wanted with their size.

I use shortcut icons in the Taskbar and in Taskbar Toolbars.

Are there any useful rules of thumb about which to extract?
    - I do realise that there are many exceptions such as SndVolSSO.dll.mun which has some entirely different icons for many of the different sizes available.

    Hello Denis,

I like to use the 256 pixel size to be more universal when manually using an .ico instead.
