    All audio crackling

    Hello Everyone,

My Dell XPS 15, which has an i7-7700HQ CPU 32 Ram has an audio issue.

Every sound source crackles. It does not matter if it is from the Internet, an MP3 or WAV played through Media Player, iTunes, a CD, everything crackles. It sounds crackling from the laptop speakers and through head phones.

I have tried setting audio quality to 16 bit, 44100 Hz. Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Checked for updates, none were needed.

I've tried changing the power setting to best option. I have
Disable Audio Enhancements. Nothing works, it still crackles. I even ran troubleshooting options.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

    Regards,

    Rob

If the "laptop speakers" are built in to the laptop, and the headphones use a jack on the laptop, it might just be that the audio chip is going bad.
Unless ofc, something happened recently that we don't know about.

You seem to have done excellent troubleshooting, and the problem seems to occur in ALL instances.
The only thing that all those things have in common is... the audio chip itself.

Is there "anything" that has recently changed? Maybe a new wireless dongle? Spilled something on the laptop?
Dropped the laptop? Something that would cause interference in the audio circuits?
Does the problem still occur when you move the laptop to a different location?

Have you tried a System restore, to eliminate ALL possible software causes?
Try anything you can think of to eliminate all possible interference causes.
And if nothing mechanical has happened, like physical damage, then that pretty much just leaves the audio chip itself.

Disable the Dell Support Assist and see if it helps. I encountered that on a field test Dell XPS laptop and disabling Support Assist fixed that specific PC. We have seen some cases on the Dell forums of Support Assist interferring.

Wi-Fi, on some, has also been the cause. Not sure what has been resolved on this.

Resplendence Latency Mon may help in problem resolution.

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming 5577, similar to yours. It has an i5 7300HQ.

Thank you. Well, my system just goes from bad to worse. It is BSOD every time I turn it on, and different codes every time.

System Interputs is running at 100%, the fan is screaming.

I paid over $3K for this just three years ago, and for no reason, it is doing this. As much as I hate to, I'll do a full reset.

    Wish me luck.

    Cheers,

    Rob

    Hi!
When experiencing problems of this kind where it can be hard to know if the operating system or the hardware is the culprit, I usually download a Linux ISO and burn it to a USB drive and boot with the new OS.
One Linux distro that works well, at least on my laptop, is Ubuntu Studio.
It is always nice to have a couple of Linux distros at hand when trying to troubleshoot computer problems!

Have you run the Dell hardware diagnostics? F12 at power on will access a menu. One option is diagnostics. Run them.

When did this start? Has this PC ever worked without problems?

If it did, what preceded the problem?

Hardware update? Software update? Cat walked over keyboard?....

Do you have a disk image created before this all started? (Disk imaging is endlessly recommended by members so you have a chance of recovering relatively painlessly from bad situations- even if your disk fails...). E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + large enough external disk.

Clearly until you resolve resource usage and BSODs there's no point troubleshooting crackle.

There is a dedicated section for BSOD problems, with a specialist tool for data collection.

Well, I did a full rest. I even redownloaded the OS from the cloud. So far so good. But for this to happen for no apparent reason, again, it has really turned me off Windows. I now have to spend the next week and more getting it back to where it was.

I'm a composer and run a DAW, Mixcraft and Sibelius, and all the other connected hardware and software, it is extensive and takes a vast amount of time to get each program running correctly. And this is the last time I'm mucking around with Windows, because I've wasted way too much time.

I'm going to get a new Mac and see how that goes.

Thanks for all the help, but why this happened, I can't say. I was doing everything as I normally do, and then wham. Which makes me think hardware, but it is going OK now. Still slow, which is nuts for an i7 with 32 gig ram and all I do is music, no video.

    Cheers,

    Rob

I suspect bad capacitors in the power brick or the motherboard. Caps seem prone to failing in power bricks. It doesn't help that the cooling is passive in the "brick" power supplies!

Another possibility is temperatures. Laptops especially need to have the dust blown out at least once a year.
They sell can of compressed air for this purpose.
