Can I move apps from C to D drive on Surface Pro 6?

    Windows 21H1
I only have about 14% storage left out of 118GB on my SP6 (i5-8xxxx CPU, 1.6MHz) and have just added a micro SanDisk Extreme 265GB - 160/90 to the system. I only want (would like) Firefox and Thunderbird to remain on the C drive, along with a couple photo editing apps. I know I can move files from C to D, but I'm not so sure about moving apps...as I have many apps that are only used occasionally and I'd like to move them to D. So, my two questions:

    1. Can apps be successfully moved from C to D?
    2. If yes to (1), is there much of a perceivable slow down between opening on C vs D?

    Hello flycaster ,
You can move store apps: Move Apps to another Drive in Windows 10

Speed difference probably depends a lot on your system, so give it a try.

You can move portable apps that don't require installation just by copying them from C: to D:

For your other non-M$ Store apps, you'd have to reinstall them to D: if their installer provides that option or choosing the destination drive.

Why not find out what is using all the space - and just how much space those apps are actually using? Try Wiztree, blazingly fast when scanning a complete partition. It is generally easier to move data than apps, and many do not (readily) permit installation on other than the system partition.

As for speed, that will depend on the relative performance of the two drives, but not on the drive letter.

Unfortunately, none of my apps are from the MS store. So, I guess I'll just have to try to install them in D, realizing some may not allow me to do so. But, before doing so, let me ask: Should I first uninstall the app from C before installing into D?

Yes, I would uninstall first. I would look in "Apps and features" first, sorted by size, to see what the largest apps are.

You may want to make a full backup of your boot drive before starting: Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect
