I've noticed that some of the software us 'traditionalists' rely upon is falling by the wayside since so many folks are using their smartphones to do things like the Internet, E-Mail, banking, etc. I don't do the online banking part, can get to my bank in 4 miles and light traffic outside of tourist season.

Outside of a checkbook program, I do use my credit union's online bill pay to save on postage and mail time. And some bills, I pay directly on the respective web sites of the payer.

But aside from that, I have gotten so used to having my own checkbook ledger in a computer program spreadsheet (mostly with MS Money over many years), I will never go back to a pen and paper check register to log bill pay or other transactions in my checking account. And even after MS retired Money Plus in 2009 (and some of its enhanced features), the option to download data files (for monthly deposits and expenses) from my credit union's web site has remained ever since. For me, MS Money was/is dead simple to use and very convenient.

Back in 2009, MS claimed they were retiring the program because of 'changing market needs'. I was surprised they did that because I feel there will always be a need for some type of computer generated checkbook programs. And Quicken must think there is a market for this type of software as they have continued to offer their version through the years. My theory was/is that MS never appropriately marketed MS Money and they felt it was wise to just stayed focused on their cash cows like MS Office.......so they kicked MS Money to the curb. However, the Microsoft Money Plus (Sunset version) was always an alternative and free!

The registry hack worked inasmuch as the program starts without an error. However, when I tried to import a .qif file from my bank it crashed as it imported the file. I got the "Import complete" dialog box and immediately crashed. When I start it again the dialog box is still showing and immediately crashes again. I can't click OK to dismiss the dialog box.
I had exactly the same problem importing a qif file. Couldn't get the program to start with the 'Import Complete' dialogue. However I followed the instructions at:
Windows 8 (64-bit version) compatibility with Sunset Money | Ameridans Microsoft Money Offline Weblog

and once I had put the new .dll file version in place, the program started normally and completed the import. Hopefully this will be the end of these problems, no doubt I will find out next time I come to do my complete accounts next month!

I made the registry changes and I applied the recommended patch. If you import transactions, Money will still shut down. BUT you can go on line to your bank, print out your docs, be sure to delete the docs and any trans on your computer. Run the patch and manually update money. It's a pain but you can reconcile your check registries until microsoft comes up with an update to fix. I'm a cheapskate and not ready to throw in the towel yet. One more thing, if money doesn't "like" something about a trans it will shut down and you may have to reword the payee name so it will accept the transaction.

    Solved!

I just left a message with Microsoft Support - they called me back within one minute - and got through to a very helpful lady who very efficiently linked to my computer and sorted it out for me. Ten minutes later Money is working perfectly. :)

What did the lady say (do) that solved the problem?

She altered the registry somehow. I've no idea but it didn't cost anything and it worked so I was happy just to watch.

This solution worked for me! Yeah, it is absolute life saver for me!

Thanks to "im-mad" who gave this wonderful solution in one the forums!!

After much searching I have found this works for me
MS Money (MoneyDlxSunset) has worked with following registry change.
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer]
    "Version"="9.11.10240.0" (originaly: 9.11.10240.16384)
I'm not sure about side effect by this change. registry change is at own risk.

Why not just get Microsoft to fix it as I did? It didn't cost anything.

I tried the registry change and Money worked for one day the next day it opens but as soon as I try to add a transaction it errors. "Money Has Stopped Working blah blah blah"
