Windows Media Player, Burned CD's only give me "track 1, track 2, etc.

What is the next most universal format that will play in CD equipment of nearly all ages?

The "Redbook" standard for audio CD's is 16 bit 44.1Khz wav files. I'm not sure what you mean by "universal format that will play in CD equipment of nearly all ages". Older audio CD players would only play the Redbook standard song files and as noted burned at slow speeds. Even today, there are new audio CD players that will only play the Redbook standard, not MP3's.

An easy way if you find an old copy of WINAMP is to create the Virtual audio CD and mount it. Windows 10 will mount "Virtual CD"s.

Now RIP the audio CD ("Virtual CD") and it will tag all the tracks for you --works for FLAC / WAV etc etc. It STILL works in W10 and as it connects to Gracenote for getting CD info then you've got decent tagging info already done for you.

Winamp will also rip the physical CD -- I abandoned physical CD's long ago -- I kept the ISO images of them on HDD. You'll probably see the CD as track1.cda etc. Winamp will rip it for you.

Otherwise it's a bit of a kuffuffle --you can tag manually with mp3tag or similar -

The Free version should still be around too -- but ripping speed is limited.

Once you've got the tracks all nicely tagged then you can use software to create a new physical CD if you need to - I think there's loads of Linux free ones for creating Audio CD's from ripped tracks.

Hi, as the author of the WMPCDText plug-in I'd still like to point out that my plug-in only adds support for reading CD-Text in WMP. Writing CD-Text is something that WMP cannot do, even with my plug-in. You will have to use different software for burning your CDs. Nero is an example that has already been mentioned.

Furthermore, CD-Text only makes sense on audio CDs. WMP can also be set to burn data CDs containing the original MP3/WMA/WAV files. In the latter case, there's no CD-Text and the metadata embedded in the audio files will be displayed instead.
