    As I posted, Greenshot
I press PrtScn, drag my capture, and it saves to my desktop sequentially numbered automatically.
Alternatively, Alt+PrtScn saves a window capture in like manner automatically.

I'll check it out again - hard to remember exactly, but I think I was left with the impression that it would only do an entire screen

(Captured this immediately with Alt+PrtScn btw!)

That is definitely not the entire screen. Greenshot obviously merits further investigation.

Since you are so persevering, I will tell you WHY I want snippingtool the way it was in Win7.
The fact that the pics are saved is NO advantage to me; I want them on the clipboard to paste into a chat program; and because it is in a chat context, I want it to be as 'efficient' as possible' so I can concentrate on the chat rather than cyber technicalities.

I use a Logitech wireless keyboard with integrated mouse on a external monitor which is my TV. I have never been able to just take a screen shot. Or at least find any location or see anything showing there ever was a screen shot taken? Anniversary or the first Win 10 so I settled with snipping tool manually. I've tried every take a screenshot idea like what was posted in the pic a few replies above this one. So what am I missing

I posted a response to explaining what and why my needs are, but it did not appear in the thread.

I will follow this post with an explanation.

Why I want a one-click-snippingtool is because I use it to PASTE into chat - so there is no advantage to me in the clip being saved - then I have to find it and drag it into chat and delete it from wherever. With snippingtool it goes straight to the clipboard, whence I can paste it. It is important to concentrate on the chat rather than on the EXTRA clicks that Win10 foists on me.

Sorry - my first explanation did get posted - but the awkward arrangement of threads in this forum made me miss it.

I have now tried Greenshot - and it seems that it might not have been amongst the ones I tried before - or there was a problem installing it [I think it was the delay caused by Avast scanning of the install file]. It allows captures to be shunted to the clipboard immediately from whence they can of course be pasted; it can be launched with windows by default, so needs nothing extra to launch it; It allows a 'region' default for capture mode, and allows for CTRL PRINTSCREEN to make it snip ready [ALT-PRNTSCRN is NOT available in MY system]. It seems to meet my requirements on ALL counts ! Thank you so much

I clicked on the green button - assuming it said 'mark as solved', but it says 'mark unsolved' I don't know how to undo that; more importantly, I want to mark it as solved, but THAT option is not nearly as obvious.

"In Win7, once you click on snippingtool the first time, you can immediately select the area to be snipped, without clicking on NEW."

Try this free program, my go-to screen capture tool, Lightshot, here - http://app.prntscr.com/en/index.html

Pin it to taskbar after install and it's ready to go with one-click (no 'new' button like snipping tool; screen will turn gray and you draw your capture box). In the bottom row of controls, there is a 'copy' option which goes to clipboard, from which you can paste into chat; or 'print' and save'. Also incl various highlighters, lines and arrows you can draw or add text. See the 'Tutorials' link or FAQ at page bottom for more but prog is very intuitive to use and easy to learn. I think it will do all you want which is same as me, quick launch, instant use.

Free Office Snip from Microsoft is an excellent alternative. It sits nicely on top of the display or lets you drag it wherever you want to, hiding itself when not needed.

As said above - I am COMPLETELY satisfied with Greenshot - but, when I can find the spare time, I WILL try Snip and Lightshot and report back.

I've now tried both. They are NOT better than Greenshot for MY purposes. M$Snip is obtrusive, rather than discreet, but seems to have the required functionality .
