Problem installing Windows Movie Maker 6, need directory structure

First time poster, so hello folks.

Having used previous versions of Windows Movie Maker (WMM) before I decided to give the one with Windows 10 a try, but I find it completely unusable.

So, I decided to find an older version that works and found this page:
    Blaine's Movie Maker Blog

It has two installers, one for 32 bit and one for 64 bit. Downloaded the 64bit version and it flat out refuses to run. Even tried it in compatibility mode. There are no links to contact Blaine that I could find anywhere on his website.

Also tried the 32 bit version on the offchance I could run it in compatibility mode, but a warning is shown saying that it isn't compatible with 64 bit OS.

So, I installed 7zip and extracted the .MSI file into a directory and then used WinRar to extract the .CAB file into another directory.

I now have access to all of the files but the problem is, I need to know what the directory structure is for WMM6. Cab files, when extracted, just dump all the files into a single directory.

    ....................................................................................................

Could someone who has WMM6 installed on their computer please run this simple batch (attached) that you may need to edit with the correct path.

    Batch:
    Code:
    @echo off

:: replace this with your WMM6 path
    :: /````````````|`````````````\
    cd C:\Program Files\Movie Maker

    dir *.* /s /b >c:\WMM_Output.txt

It'll save output like this to the file, C:\WMM_Output.txt
    Code:
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\CaptureWizard.exe
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\en-US
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\MOVIEMK.dll
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\MOVIEMK.exe
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Pipeline.dll
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\PipeTran.dll
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\VideoCameraAutoPlayManager.exe
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\VideoMediaHandler.dll
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\WMM2AE.dll
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\WMM2CLIP.dll
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\WMM2EXT.dll
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\WMM2FILT.dll
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\en-US\CaptureWizard.exe.mui
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\en-US\MovieMk.dll.mui
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\en-US\MovieMk.exe.mui
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\en-US\VideoCameraAutoPlayManager.exe.mui
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\en-US\VideoMediaHandler.dll.mui
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\en-US\WMM2AE.dll.mui
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\en-US\WMM2CLIP.dll.mui
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\en-US\WMM2FILT.dll.mui
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Common.fxh
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\DissolveAnother.png
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\DissolveNoise.png
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Filters.xml
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\news.png
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\paint.png
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Parity.fx
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Profiles
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Sample1.jpg
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Sample2.jpg
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Sample3.jpg
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Sample4.jpg
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Profiles\Windows Media HD 1280x720.prx
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Profiles\Windows Media HD 1440x1080.prx
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Profiles\Windows Media HD 1920x1080.prx
    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\Shared\Profiles\Windows Media HD 960x720.prx

Note: this isn't the directory structure for WMM6 so if it looks exactly the same, it's showing the directory structure for Windows Movie Maker 2012. I'm after the directory structure for WMM6.

    Welcome to TenForums aaronlowe

Windows 10 doesn't have a 'Movie Maker' as such. It does have a sort of 'movie' option in the Photos app, but that's not really a full-featured video editing app.

That's really old, it's Movie Maker 6 and was the version released for Vista. Do you really want to try getting something that old to work?

The last version of Microsoft's Movie Maker was the one included in Windows Essentials 2012 which has now reached end of life and is no longer available for download from Microsoft. Pity really, as my Movie Maker 2012 still works well in Windows 10 x64 version 1809. While Essentials 2012 has been withdrawn from Microsoft's servers, MiniTools have repackaged just Movie Maker 2012 (and the Photo Gallery it requires) from the Essentials packages, you can download it from here:

Welcome to use Windows Movie Maker

Strange, just now using your Blaine link, I had it downloaded and installed without problem.
I am running Win 10 Home ver 1809 current build 64-bit.

Thank you. Somehow in the copy and paste the 'L' got left off the end of the .html in my link. I've corrected that and my link in post #2 now works.

Well, now I feel stupid because the install was successful. There was just no indication that it had done anything. No, installation complete, launch Movie Maker? message at the end.

I realised this just after my post but couldn't delete the post as it was waiting moderation.

As for Movie Maker 6, it's working great. I couldn't get the latest version to do what I wanted at all. It didn't even seem to have a timeline reel that included other information like audio and such, and when I tried to mute the video, nothing happened. The whole GUI felt awful so I decided to go back to WMM6. That works much better.

I would suggest that, for future reference :
    1. Save the Blaine link.
    2. Save the WMM 6.0 installer in case you have to do a clean install of Win 10 and you will have to reinstall wmm 6.0

Finished the video I was making. Was just a bit of fun.

    ILovetoHateU.mp4

It's safe for work but has audio so consider if you can play music.

Edited it in WMM6. Planned to save and render in WMM2012 but it said that not all elements in the project file were compatible, and when I tested the playback the timings were off.

This means the resolution is capped at 640 x 480, which is ok I suppose. A lot of the videos that made it up are 1080p but some were 720p so the max resolution I could have done it in WMM2012 would have been 1280 x 720 anyway.
