Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild

I had an issue with Sharepoint 2010 opening documents in read only mode. I tried a few fixes I found searching Google, but nothing worked. Then I found a fix that said to do some of the other steps i've done already, and if those fail rebuild the windows profile.

So i rebuild my profile, everything with Sharepoint is fixed, i'm having no other issues, until i tried to open a .jpg file yesterday. I have no program associated with .jpg after the profile rebuild, and i can't find the default photo viewer in Windows 10 to reassign it to the .jpg extension.

I've seen reg hacks to get back the old Win7 photo viewer but i don't want that one, I never liked it in the first place. I did like the Win 10 one. Is there a trick i'm not finding to get the Win10 default photo viewer back?

Hello Kormath, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

The default app for .jpg files is the Photos app.

If the Photos app is not listed in "Open with", then you might see if resetting it using OPTION TWO below may restore it to be able set as the default app.

Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

Might be helpful to list what i've done :) I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.

Just to verify, did you already try to reset the app?

If you mean going to settings/system/default apps and clicking the reset there yes, twice now. The photo viewer option is blank and remains blank after the reset, so i have to choose a default. When i click to choose a default all i get is Paint.

As test, use OPTION TWO to re-register the app instead to see if that may restore it.
