Request to choose how to open application

Hi, My question is....when I try to open a new application I get a box that will ask me how I would like to open the file. It is asking me to choose a program/application to open it with. I don't know how to choose the correct program to open certain files with. Is there a way for windows to find and use the appropriate application to open my programs with. I hope I have expressed myself correctly and haven't confused you to much. Thank you
    Pat

when I try to open a new application
When you click on a programs (application) shortcut that is New, or old for that matter, it should not ask you how to open it, it should open the Program.
I don't know how to choose the correct program to open certain files
If you have a file that was created with a program you would choose that program to open the file. Every file has an Extension (ie) [filename].doc, [filename[.txt, [filename],jpg etc If you right click the file and choose Properties, it will tell you what the extension is. If it is not obvious, like the previous examples, you can type in Google, how to open .TFT file or whatever extension. It should list the programs that open that file. If you have that program installed, it should open that file or you can browse to the program in list and choose it. Or you can download the program if you don't have it.
