Yes. I was wondering about that.
I was asking myself " how can it be corrupted if it is ok with open office ?"
But I kept my mouth shut as I know very little about OpenOffice, and I installed MS Office 2007 only because I need to use MS PowerPoint.

Starting from MS Word 2007 and higher, the default file type of word file is docx.
PowerPoint .....................ppsx, pptx
Excel...................................xlsx

MS Office 2007 and higher are capable to read both file formats........................
doc and docx.
pps and ppsx, ppt and pptx
xls and xlsx.

Try looking at WPS office as a freebie --it's almost 100% compatible with Ms office and IMO much better than Open Office. It will also do quite complex spreadsheets too. I believe the paid version will even run VBA macros. WPS office also runs on Android devices and Linux. Note though there's no email client.

Hi there @elbmek -- have a look at my previous post in this thread on WPS office -- can read and write docx formats and most of Office 2016 stuff too.
