    Runtime Error

Just been trying to reinstall an older game Far Cry, from a CD, needed a reinstall. Getting a 'runtime error' from the installer, ideas? Not experienced this one on this game before, ever!

Have you installed on Windows 10 before? It maybe something in Windows 10 that is just not compatible. Of course now MS updates Windows with builds they can move the goalposts - so something that worked on a previous build of 10 may not work on a newer build - a worrying prospect. You could try running the installer executable in compatibility mode. Failing that you maybe able to pickup Far Cry digital version on something like steam, I'd imagine it's extremely cheap given its age. There's no guarantee it'll work but I think steam mods their installers to fit in with their client and as such their installers are far tidier and more likely to succeed

yes mate, it was on this pc for since new, but when I ran it for the first time in ages, yesterday, I have video problems looking through the sniper scope, corrupted image in telescope but not in game. I decided maybe a reinstall after all this time and thats when the runtime error came up, before installation actually began.

I have several games on my pc via steam incl AOE2 HD. - yes, Far Cry is on there so going to go for that option. Thanks for the heads up Scotty.

No worries mate. I noticed it was on GOG.com at the slightly cheaper price of £6.89 whereas steam as £6.99, given how old the game is I think it's a little steep. I wouldn't take it as absolute but GOG.com does say it works on Windows 10. I guess they are both same versions so it's a cause of take your pick

I'm wondering a security program [anti-whatever] is intercepting the install process before it has a chance to begin?

I downloaded FC from steam and note that it had installed a file DX ???????? runtime or something. It gave me an idea and ran the cd installation, this time it skipped the cant runtime thing and began to go through the motions.

BUT, it tells me there is a previous version on the drive, should I remove that first? (I deleted this myself and cleaned registry). I said ok, and it goes approx 3/4 across the bar and stops, and stays, only means out is to task manager and sign out.

So now I am running ccleaner disk wipe free space on the relevant drive!

Hmm, did you try running the steam version after downloading to see if it ran? Am interpreting that you then tried the physical cd media install again afterwards? It sounds a bit messy and I've never used ccleaner before but it sounds a good option in order to try and fully cleanse the PC of far cry. I think the two install attempts are clashing. Once done, install the steam version again and discard the idea of using the optical media version. That's just what I would do

Ccleaner wiped the D drive free space but Far Cry installer keep saying that there is an old version there, there isn't. I cant get past it, the Steam version does work but did not go past the profile stage until I try and figure this out. Because its not right, I want to finds out why its not right. Anyway, Steam FC does work. The problems with the CD version were all before the steam installation (£7.99) So clashes I think are not an option. Downloading the steam version did solve the runtime though !!!! :)
