Cannot verify Java in IE 11 Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hello!

Sorry since this is not relevant to Windows 10, but I post here in hope that someone knows and can help since Google is not always helpful...

I got my hands on Windows Server 2012 R2 this weekend. I installed on a customer's server and before I give it to him, I thought I would compare it to Windows 8.1 and 10 and see the similarities and differences. The first thing I noticed was that I could not change the desktop icons unless I enabled the Desktop Experience Feature first. I then noticed that it could accept Windows 8 drivers, as expected, and it could run almost anything that can be run on Windows 8/10. Then it might be my idea, but I think it is somewhat faster than running Windows 8/10 on the same hardware. Probably this is because most features are disabled by default making it lighter than a full-featured Windows 8 installation.

Now my question: I installed Flash, Java and Silverlight, mostly to check compatibility. I noticed that Java installed successfully (both 32-bit and 64-bit version, just in case) but when trying to verify Java installation in Internet Explorer 11 I get a message that is not installed or disabled! I checked both in IE settings and in Java Control Panel, it is enabled and of course there is registered in Programs and Features! Am I missing something?

Thank you in advance and excuse me for the off-topic post.

Well! I found the solution! I had to disable IE Enhanced Protection Mode, as described in here. I know the post is not related to Windows 10, sorry for that, but since I found a solution I wanted to share to help others having the same problem. Case closed!

    Similar problem with Win 10

I have just about completed the transfer of all programmes to my new Win 10 OS and have found an anomaly with regard to installing the Java I need to run one of them. They all run OK except for a JNLP one that was good but over the last week or so has suddenly stopped working with a message on IE11 to Download Java. I did that and when I went to verify it, I got the same message. Thinking that I had fluffed the install, I did it again. I tried more than once making sure that I closed and re-opened the browser. But even when restarting the computer, I still get a failure.

By the way, the same JNLP launch works fine on my alternative Opera browser. I have checked the Java configuration and that shows the latest 32 bit java installation in place and enabled, which it must be for Opera to launch the programme via a Java button! - http://www.pawpeds.com/webstart/PawPedsClient/ the URL normally works with either http or https

After lots of searching (including the useless Java help pages!) I came across this thread. I found others which stated that for Win 10 Home there is a group policy option to change Enhanced Protected Mode but that cannot be accessed as gpedit.msc is not installed in Home. I have also found a website that offers to install gpedit, but I doubt its veracity.

Is this the right way to go, or is there a better solution somewhere in this Forum?

    Tony

PS the suggested link to the solution in the earlier message is no longer relevant.

I think this setting can be accessed from "traditional" Control Panel, Internet Settings and then go to Security tab

In that setting, only Protected Mode is found.

In the Internet Options via CP there is a setting for running 64 bit in Enhanced Protected Mode, but as I am using IE11 which is 32 bit, that has no effect even though it is turned off!

Opera, which does run in 64 bit works OK on the JNLP file. I just don't like that browser!

I will continue my search for a free (hopefully) way to get upgraded to Pro.

I would restore all settings to default and then carefully change anything I want again before installing and testing Java
