Can Someone Help with a Corrupt Modern App?

Solitaire won't start - it crashes after the splash screen. I tried to update it through the store, but it fails.

My first thought was to manually remove it using PowerShell, but attempting to remove it generates this error:

    Code:
    PS C:\Users\teddy> remove-appxpackage -package Microsoft.MicrosoftSolitaireCollection_3.8.4181.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
remove-appxpackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: 0x80073CF6, Package could not be registered. (Exception from

When I request the log, I get:

First issue I can see is you are running the powershell command as your user. You need to right click and run it as admin.

The powershell prompt should start in C:\Windows\system32 not C:\Users\teddy and the windows should say Administrator in the titlebar like this.

Can Someone Help with a Corrupt Modern App?-powershell-admin.png

Your log is saying it can't find files. This could be because of authority. Alternatively it could be because they really are not there. There are manifest files which list the dependencies of individual apps and it could be it is referring to something that doesn't exist or just something you aren't authorized to see.

Try it running as Administrator and post the results.

You could consider something else in the interim. Both of these are better than the store solitaire in my opinion.

    1. The old Windows 7 games. I used to use these in Windows 10 and they work fine up until the last public update (build 10586) released in November. You can download them from here Hearts and Solitaire Games in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums If you are part of the Windows 10 insider testing program though they don't work anymore (at least for me).

    2. What I use now is Download 123 Free Solitaire - MajorGeeks . This is pretty OK (and has lots of solitaire versions) but unfortunately doesn't let you cheat by repeatedly undoing your moves unless you get the paid version which I haven't.

Thanks for the help! As an admin, looks like I'm getting something similar:

OK, I'm not sure why you are so specific with your command. Perhaps it is correct I don't know as I have a different version to you.

    I tried
    Code:
    remove-appxpackage -package Microsoft.MicrosoftSolitaireCollection_3.8.4181.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
and it just fails as I just don't have it. (I'm on build 14342 so probably that is why).

What about the standard way? Sorry if I say standard it is just what I do. You don't have to specify all the bla bla after the name of the app.

Just assign a variable the generic name and then remove the AppxPackage and the AppxProvisionedPackage like this.

I also delete anything from %appdata% to be on the safe side. If you don't want to then ignore the last 2 lines.
    Code:
    $app="Microsoft.MicrosoftSolitaireCollection"
    Get-AppxPackage -Name $app -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage
    Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -Online |
    	where DisplayName -EQ $app |
    		Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online
    $appPath="$Env:LOCALAPPDATA\Packages\$app*"
    Remove-Item $appPath -Recurse -Force -ErrorAction 0
That works fine for me - if you copy paste what is in the box above and press enter it should be removed like this:

Can Someone Help with a Corrupt Modern App?-solitaire.png

You'll see a bar running across the top of the screen for a couple of seconds but as I've just uninstalled mine testing this I can't replicate it quickly and was too slow to take a picture.

EDIT: I just went to the Windows Store and downloaded it again and it is working OK so give that script a try.

I know next to nothing about PowerShell or its commands. I'm just using commands I found in other help forums.

Thanks again for all your help. I tried to copy and paste your code, but still got a big red error. I tried first without the last two lines, and Solitaire was still in my start menu, and the splash screen still came up before it crashed. Then I tried ALL your lines. Still got error messages, but now when I click Solitaire, not even the splash screen comes up. I'm doing all this using PS as an administrator. Here's the error:

    Code:

Sorry about that - it was worth a try. According to here Package could not be registered. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80073CF6) someone fixed this 0x80073CF6 error by manually deleting the folders from C:\Program Files\WindowsApps directory. This is a hidden directory and you would have to take ownership of it to do this. You could try that.

Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives - Show in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Owner of Files and Folders - Change in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

However I've always ended up breaking all apps when I start updating things manually in this directory.

Another safer (but slightly long winded) way to fix this would be to download a Windows 10 ISO and do a repair install. This will replace all Windows Apps with defaults. You will keep all your non-store apps and documents but would have to download and apps you got from the store again. The method is described in step 4 here Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
