TS Video File Editor

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has used software to trim TS video files
I have lots of files that are recordings from TV, I had them set to overrun incase the shows ran late, so I have about 10 mins at the end of the files I want to remove

An recommendations that will allow me to trim and then save, no conversion or re encoding

Prefer free, but if low cost is only way then that's fine

Thanks for the info, that sounds exactly like the thing I want
However I don't think it supports the file type I have, TS extension and I think the coding is MPEG2

I will give it a try and see what it does, if not it gives me an idea of a progam to do more searching on/similar

I have an old version of a certain video editor that I cannot name because if you search for and download more recent versions it comes bundled with adware. I could link you to the installer if you want to test it. Note: The program also needs to be blocked via firewall to avoid automatic update checks that would prompt the user to download the latest version.

It does a lot more than just trim .ts files.

I do the same as you and I cut off the garbage at start & end using VideoReDo
- It does not need to do any re-encoding [but can detect faults in a file so serious that it warns you if needs to on occasion]
- You drag a slider across and are able to define cut-off points by frame as you look at them [so you can cut off right at the end of the credits & before the adverts start].
- It is so easy to use that it takes me less than half a minute to trim off the starting & ending 10 mins for the BBC.
- It takes far less than one commercial break to cut out all the ad breaks during programmes on the other channels. Even for them I think it is generally less than two minutes to set up the edits.
- You can set up a whole batch of edits [marking out cut-out points] on as many files as you want then tell it to do the edits while you are off making a pot of tea. Sometimes, just for example, I'll work through setting the editing points for a couple of dozen files then tell it to get on with them when I am ready.
- In checking that the link still works, I can see that it has really shot up in price.

It's a very good application so I'll complete this post. If I'd seen the new price beforehand I would not have bothered responding.

I keep recordings too, exported as .TS from my Freeview PVR. I thoroughly recommend conversion, the .TS format uses the very old MPEG2 codec, and converting to MPEG4 as a .mp4 file can reduce the file size to about a 10th of the original with little or no noticeable loss of quality. However, if you just want to keep it as .TS, then that's your choice.

I use the free open source command line utility FFmpeg for all my conversions and editing. To trim a .TS starting at 1min 30sec in, and ending at 28min 15secs and with no codec conversion whatsoever, the command line would be:

FFmpeg -i original.TS -ss 1:30 -to 28:15 -c copy trimmed.TS

...though I recommend you compare the results with a conversion to .mp4 (the more time you allow to do the conversion, the smaller and higher quality it will be).

FFmpeg -i original.TS -ss 1:30 -to 28:15 -crf 28 -preset veryslow trimmed.mp4

I had not noticed at all.

A full copy of VideoReDo is now $95.
My upgrade to their latest version costs $30 {~£20} [I first bought it in 2012 for $45 then upgraded to the then latest version in 2017 for $30].
- My requirements have not grown so the new features might be wasted on me.
- I'll hum and ha about it for a while then toss a coin.

My requirements are quite complex, and include cropping, scaling, removal of station ident logos, and of course editing out ad breaks. Many video editors include some or all of the FFmpeg code, including your VideoReDo which uses its MPEG-2 codec. The open source video editor Shotcut has previously had the nod of approval from Kari. and that uses FFmpeg extensively.

It can be a steep learning curve, but I prefer to use FFmpeg direct from the command line, usually writing a batch file containing all the required edit commands. I use the old MS Movie Maker to find all the edit points to the nearest frame, but that's all I use it for these days.
