I have just created a tile for Firefox and have no problem getting the background color close, I could have exactly matched it if I took the time though.

Try downloading SMACC, the link is in my signature, for a tool that gives you the RGB where you click the mouse, then go to RGB color (255, 128, 0) to Hex, Pantone, RAL, HSL, HSV, HSB, JSON. Get color scheme. to get the HEX value after entering the RGB value.

It seems the color isn't generated automatically: the grey is forced somewhere, don't know where. Everyone is affected by this. Alt least fresh installs of Firefox 43.
What I did is test with a fresh install of Firefox 43.

    Cliff,
Nice work, however it doesn't want to apply the custom tile. It repins grey.
Checked with a copy of the firefox.exe from desktop and pin it to start and auto color of icon tile is yellowish, blue, the theme color:

Confirmed that the grey is forced.

So far, nothing to do for the matter.

You might have to check in the start menu folder(right click icon and more>>open file location and delete the old shortcut so the new tile can take over. C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Oh yeah in my short 2 days of doing this, I have found that unpinning the old>> rebooting>> and then pinning the .exe makes it easier in the pinning of the new tile "icon".

Yes! Cliff, you were right about the reboot! There may be some cache that prevented this...
Also after unpinning, the shortcut still remained in AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs so it needs to be removed before reboot.

When I initially set the HEX value to star menu color it's a bit lighter, I have also found the restarting File Explorer helps the tiles background color get closer to the actual color value. If you know what I'm trying to say...

    Background color?

    All good:

The same value as the XML dictates.
