How to "change app recommendation settings"?

I don't use any MS Store apps and have long since used the usual file association methods to define other applications as default (e.g. foobar2000 for music and VLC for video). However, when I try to open a bunch of music files, Windows 10 only offers to open them in WMP. When I try to "Edit" a batch file (which I like to do with PSpad), I get a prompt to "change app recommendation settings" because PSpad is an "unverified app". The settings page that is linked to the error message, Settings - Apps - Apps & Features, contains nothing resembling "change app recommendation settings". As usual, none of the MS forum topics on this subject are any help at all. It appears that these settings pages (and those referred to in connection with "S mode") have changed since they were written. How can I persuade Windows to let me use the software that I choose?

P.S. Under Settings - Apps - Default apps I don't see an entry for "editor" or "text". Is there a way to do something here, or do I have to look up all of the Notepad associations in the registry and replace them with PSpad?

Hi, Default Programs Editor (free) may help you. Several sections- not too complicated, but it's rather neat. Sometimes the text description of the sections is less than obvious.

Nirsoft's Filetypesman is another to look for. Free.

Windows is set up to deal with programs whose authors register them as capable of handling certain file types.

Thanks for the tips! According to alternativeto.net, Default Programs Editor is no longer being maintained, so I tried out Nirsoft's FileTypesMan. Unfortunately, Windows gives me the same cr@p as before, even when I "run as administrator" (see screenshot). It seems to be something new; I have never seen it before today. How to "change app recommendation settings"?-notmsverified.png

    Hi, try this in Settings:

Re: Default Programs Editor - last version was perhaps 2018. It's really rather good at what it does.
E.g. its feedback page is still open.

Bear in mind that unless MS revises the registry structure it works with, it's unlikely to become outdated.
Home page valid + donations are still accepted

Thanks, but I found that post already, and, as previously stated, it doesn't jibe with what I see (screenshot attached). How to "change app recommendation settings"?-apps-features.png

I tried that too and got the same error message posted in my previous post, even though the Default Programs Editor webpage says, "No install - standalone app".

In your screenshot, post #3, there's a link 'Change my app...'

What happens when you click on that?

This is what you should see in Settings for 1903 or later, apparently.

My other PC is build 1903- just updated this one from 1903 to 20H2 today.
    I'll see what's shown there.

I already found that post as well, but as you can see from my last screenshot, I don't find anything like that.
