    OUTLOOK 2013 with IMAP - what a POS - Back to 2010

    Hi there

Finally got rid of Office 2013 but especially Outlook 2013 off W10 -- back to Outlook 2010 (and Office 2010).

If you use IMAP Outlook 2013 is HOPELESS if you use different SMTP SENDING servers - it's totally NOT USER FRIENDLY to Local folders at all -- moving stuff from IMAP folder to LOCAL folder just LOSES email !!!!!

The whole setup is B/S too -- you have to do the test send -- can't uncheck the box - and if the test is unsuccessful -- the account can't be created -- what a load of "Bovine Scatology".

Bad one Ms -- also the themes are Horrible too unless you walk around all day wearing a pair of Ray Ban "Shades".

    cheers

I agree on the themes side, could do with some better ones

IMAP works fine for me, 2 accounts set up using this method, one of which is gmail and not had any problems, not sure what method Hotmail uses but this has no issues either

Not tried local folders, I have no need for them so don't know if mine deletes emails when moving, items just sync and get made available offline so not sure what benefit local folders would have for me

    Hi there

Local folders are fine if you want to copy to another computer / tablet or if you are OFF LINE completely.
Also it's easier to simplify, categorize and store email you want to save. Some IMAP systems don't allow you directly to create folders under the IMAP server.

I don't like also the fact you have to complete a successful test send and receive before you can successfully create an account. On Office 2010 you could uncheck the box test settings.

    Jimbo,

Did you notice any improvement in font rendering (in Word docs and Outlook mail) when you reverted back to Office 2010?

    Hi there
I don't recall the fonts being a problem --in any case you can always install more fonts and use them. I've a decent monitor and the INTEL HD graphics on the laptop is OK too. Poor font rendering is probably due to poor graphics, out of date graphics driver or display settings not set up properly.

If you want to test the IMAP problem simply MOVE (not COPY) some mail from the IMAP folder to the Outlook folder (while in Outlook 2013) and then see if you can access the mail --I found that it just disappeared into thin air. !!!!

    Cheers

    Hi there

the problem with being FORCED to use the test account settings is

    1) You might NOT be currently connected to the Internet

    2) You might be travelling and say in a Hotel. A lot of ISP's won't permit you to SEND email unless you are actually connected to YOUR OWN HOME ISP (I.e yours and not a Hotel Wifi system) unless you send it via one of those ghastly WEB interfaces. You can always RECEIVE email of course so you might want to set up the OUTLOOK account BEFORE you get home so at least you can RECEIVE email using OUTLOOK even if you have to SEND via a web interface.

If the test does not complete both SEND and RECEIVE then the account can't be set up - so you have to do it online and connect to your home or work internet system.

You might also be wanting to set up a work account which you can't test until you are back online at work.

OUTLOOK 2010 gives you the option to uncheck the box (as does earlier versions).

(A lot of ISP's block ports 25 and 2525 - SMTP SEND when you are not connected to their Internet which is why in a lot of cases SEND EMAIL fails from outlook when you are in say a bar or hotel unless you use a 3rd party provider like authsmtp for sending email when away from home -- receive will always work though)

    Cheers
