    Hidden apps?

After returning from long sleep I find the start menu doesn't work. Also, right clicking on taskbar item has no effect.
When this happens I need to restart

Today during restart I got message that app "Elera" (or something like that) was preventing restart. After restarting I couldn't find this app in the start menu or in Control Panel Progs and Features! I did find a McAfee app in the Start Menu, but it was not in Control Panel list.

What's the deal with these hidden apps? Could be source of the Start Menu problem.

    Thanks for information.

Welcome to Ten Forums, dickey38. There are a lot of services running that all need to shutdown before windows shuts down. Occasionally one will hang and give that type of message. If it persists you can use the listed name to troubleshoot.
That is not the source of your start menu problems. Try running the SFC command to check system file integrity. This is from the tutorial forum. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...dows-10-a.html . It should clear up the problems with the start menu.

    Still confused

    JohnC,

Thanks for your advice. I will try that. But I think I need to find a tutorial on apps in Win10. I have assumed that the control panel > Programs and Features would show all installed apps. But I find, for example, Start Menu>all apps has an app called Groove Music which does not appear in control panel list. And when I right-click it on it I get only options to pin it to start or taskbar. How would I uninstall it? I expect there are other examples I haven't found yet.

    Thanks for you help.

Type task manager in the search box and hit enter. The top enter should be task manager desk top app, click on that. click on the details tab. These are what you saw the other day. There are many processes and services that are running that are not listed in the control panel "programs and features" section. Window app are not installed by the user and so are not listed there. Hope this helps.

Go to settings >system >Default Apps to find the Groove music app. Apps and Features above the Default Apps listing is the "programs" listings in the Control Panel. Microsoft is slowly phasing out the Control Panel settings. I should have included this in the above post.

I see. Looks like Default apps can't be deleted, but alternate app can be chosen for that function. Correct?

I did try SFC and got the message:
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Nevertheless my system seems somewhat unstable. Firefox grinds forever sometimes, unable to connect. But WiFi shows as connected to internet, and my tablet, sitting next to the laptop, connects just fine. I am thinking that some background app is throttling me, but Task Manager shows no cycle hog. So I am trying to uninstall all apps that I don't have use for.

    Thanks much for you help.
