When selecting "Retrieve key from backup" - which file is it looking for exactly and where can it be found on a host system?

Sorry for the noob question, it's just not obvious to me.

    ? \Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE

? = where the windows OS is located, to retrieve that OS Key..

    Usually windows.old

    "Retrieve key from backup"
when selected - read the top window header for the location hint..

Does showkeyplus need internet access? I had the firewall warning when it ran.
And does showkeyplus tell whether an installation of Win10 is retail or OEM?
    My output:
    Product Name: Windows 10 Home
    Product ID: 00326-10000-00000-*****
    Installed Key: YTMG3-N6DKC-*****-*****-*****
OEM Key: OEM key not present in firmware

Delete your post ....NOW you are showing your Windows key to everyone....not a good idea.
YTMG3-N6DKC-... is the generic Home key you get via the free upgrade/digital entitlement. Good point, but no big deal in this case, that key is already out there. It won't activate unless that PC already has a digital entitlement.

That's the key you get with a digital entitlement via the free upgrade. My assumption is its Retail. Go to Settings > Update & security > Activation > Product key.

EDIT: I haven't seen a OEM Retail designation anywhere in Windows 10. In the past the Product ID: shown on the System page would tell you. It may still, if you know how to read it?

    Ok good to know, I wasn't sure.....that's why I msg him....thanks :)
I have them saved in a text document for reference. They are listed in at least one tutorial too. They are useless without a digital entitlement so it's no big deal posting them. I can see why you warned him, better safe than sorry.

Enterprise doesn't qualify for the free upgrade, just so you know. My MSDN Enterprise ISO's install with a generic key that won't activate though. I never bothered to note what it was. I have to do a change key and enter my MSDN key after the install. There is no prompt for a key, and if I try to use a PID.txt file I get an invalid key error, or something like that. I don't remember what it said at the moment.

The key you posted I have listed as being for Windows 10 Pro VL-MAK? Not Enterprise. I wasn't sure if my info was accurate so I didn't post it.
Found it listed along with the other 3 you posted for me, by one of our members.....so I just pasted it in my notes.

It's not one you'll see very often. I'm not sure VL can do the free upgrade either? That's why I didn't post it.
