I have the same problem as FortMax (OP) and jona9.

My specific issue is regarding music files. The files open with winamp (set as default program) as expected when I double click on them. However, when I want to edit the tag on an mp3 file using Tagscanner, for example, that program doesn't appear in the "Open with" list, and I have to take the extra step and go through the "Choose another app." It's only an extra click, but it gets frustrating after a while, particularly since this was never an issure in Win 8, 7, Vista, XP, etc...

I have spent several hours online looking for a fix to this issue, to no avail. I have tried to manually edit the registry, downloaded software supposed to do the trick, nothing works.

I finally found this thread where people are having the same problem as me and haven't offered solutions that don't work on Windows 10.

I hope somebody finds a solution or a simple trick, I would be extremely grateful!

FortMax is unable to add an uninstalled program (which I take to mean a program written by FortMax), I cannot add an installed 32-bit program. Does the program you want to add have either of these characteristics?

Unlike FortMax, I am only dealing with installed programs. I have tried with both 32-bit and 64-bit programs, but editing the key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\OpenWithList
by assigning a new letter to the desired program and appending the letter to the MRU has no effect on the Open with list.

If you don't mind, could you give me a quick breakdown of how you were able to add the 64-bit programs to the list?

My path has .jpg just before OpenWithList.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg\OpenWithList

and my right panel looks like this

How do I add programs that were never install to the "open with" list?-2.jpg

However, my Open with includes only

    Paint
    Search the store
    Choose another app

So I perform New>String value on OpenWithList and now my right panel is

How do I add programs that were never install to the "open with" list?-3.jpg

I then restart and my Open list is

    Firefox
    Paint
    Search the store
    Choose another app

My Windows 10 is a free upgrade with a Windows 7 CoA, fresh install.

Thanks jona9 for your detailed answer.

As it turns out, I wasn't able to add any program (32 or 64 bit) to the list because the list was full. It seems like the maximum number of programs in the list is 6, and some programs were stuck in there despite removing them from the registry key. The unremovable programs were iTunes, WMP and irfanview.

After removing all the other programs from the list (audacity, VLC) except winamp and Tagscanner, I was able to add a 64 bit program (gimp) to the list. However, as in jona9's case, I am still unable to add 32 bit programs...

I'll keep looking for an answer, and I'll post a solution if I find one.
