How do I add programs that were never install to the "open with" list?

I'm having trouble adding programs that weren't installed (released as just the program exe) to the "open with" list. They show up in the "choose another app" window, but that takes extra clicks to get through, which add up since I do a lot of work with files that I open in different programs for different things.

Me too. I can add 64-bit programs, but not 32-bit programs to the initial list that pops up when I select "Open with". I modified
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\OpenWithList
The program I want to add is an installed program, unlike the OP.

You only have to do this once.................

Right click at the file in question > click Open With > click "Choose another app" > locate the program you want to open with > click it > near the bottom, check the box "Always use this app to open....." > click OK when done.

From then on, each time you click Open at the same file type, it will open with the program you have chosen, automatically.

Please reread the original and my posts. We (the op and I) want to sometimes open a file with a default program, and sometimes with a different program, and we want that different program to be on the initial "open with" list. We don't want to have to first select "Choose another app". In my case, I can add 64-bit FireFox to the list, but not 32-bit PhotoScape.

My reply is specifically addressed to FortMax.
I started by including his quote first before I replied.

I have no answer to your issue.
    Sorry.

If you can't answer the posted question, then why do you waste everyone's time with non-answers? FortMax and I want the option of choosing a program to serve our current needs without having to perform the extra "choose another app" steps. We stated our question clearly, and you can't even get FortMax's name right.

If you don't accept my answer, that is your prerogative.

My answer is ................... you only have to do it once.

If you do not like the way that Microsoft has chosen to achieve what you want then I suggest that you discuss this with Microsoft and not insult those who try to help you Here - if you do not like the help given you can always leave
