    Screenshot Tool Questionnair

    Hi all,
We plan to make a free screenshot tool. And we were wondering on some points.
Hope can get some info here to make the tool better right from the the beginning.

    1. Which screenshot tool do you use?
    2. Is there any drawback that influence your experience with it?
    3. What's your most wanted function for snipping tool?

Any info would be appreciated and I will update this thread when our the first version is ready!

    Update -09212022
The first version of this tool is ready! Check here - 100% Free Screen Capture Software for Windows 11/10/8/7 - EaseUS ScreenShot
Only basic functions. No custom keyboard shortcut choice. Will be added in the next version. Hope the present shortcuts won't trigger too many complaints!

    Sincerely,

    Hi, just a few thoughts:
    Scrolling capture:
Few tools successfully and reliably handle scrolling capture.
Duckcapture (free) is pretty good at this.

I would like to see a simple way to specify the width of the region captured and the start point of the capture.

    OCR
Capture2Text (free) does this quite well, but there are certain programs where it simply will not start the capture at all- I then have to take a screenshot of that, create an image file, then run Capture2Text on that.

It would be great to have this function in a screen capture tool.

    Save options
    Options for
    - default save location
    - choose save location each time
    - default save file type
    - choose file type each time

I'm sure others will mention plenty of other tools such as Greenshot and ShareX...

ShareX is over-complicated- too many options- but does offer scrolling capture and OCR.

We plan to achieve the function step by step.
Scrolling capture and OCR will be in the latter version as we plan. I've made a note of your suggestion on them - need to be reliable and stable.

    1. As for capturing specific width shot, I think that's necessary too. Will report and try to make a specific width capture possible in the first version, or please expect it appear in the latter version.

    2. But I didn't get start point of the capture. Does it mean to make it more abvious then you can find it easily without moving the cursor around and target?

The starting point of our software would be the place where the cursor click and the mouse will change a color, which can be treated as the start point?

    3. Save option
The first two can be met in the first version.
I've marked the latter two for file type choice.

    4. We will cover some basic functions ( pic attached can show the initial version functions). And as mentione, we will add functions like scrolling capture, OCR in later versions ( all free, this product is determined a free tool, may add a paid version for enterprise users or so, but not sure yet. )

Will these functions make our software a complicated one? We aim to make it a simple, reliable while comprehensive tool to meet all basic snipping needs.

I tried to add another pic failed. Please check the functions for the first version here:

Thanks - I was thinking particularly about specifying the start point and width of the region captured by scrolling capture.

This needs to be done such that the user can spend time modifying, adjusting.

Some utilities seem to start this after 1 click, so it's not clear from which point the capture is to start.

By contrast, region captures are easy and not problematic.

I think I got you now. That's true. I've marked two points regarding this as a combination:
1, offer specific width option for region capture.
2, for scrolling capture, make the start point obvious to make people capture the right place, while offering specific width choice.

    - and also if possible the point vertically in the page from which scrolling capture starts.

E.g. a line across the page with delimiters, all 3 draggable would be ideal.

It would also be interesting to be able to set the end point of the capture.

Imagine, for example, capturing a single very long column.

I don't get this. Will DM you for more detail.

Edge does scrolling captures but with little functionality. Start and end lines to limit the length of the scrolling captures would be a bonus. As @dalchina suggested.

If you right click the image and open link in new tab you can expand the image. I've drawn (not very well) start and end lines example. This was using Edge.

Get this. May I know do you have any suggestion about how to achive this?
I assume it this way and I think Dalchina may also suggested this way:
    1. Click the start point;
    2. Move the scroll bar to get the end area quickly;
    3. Click - plays as the end line.

Yes. When you select scroll capture you have the ability to select start and the end of what the capture takes (length), so you don't have to have the whole page capture to save.
