I just downloaded the free Portable 64-bit version of CDBurnerXP yesterday to test creating an .iso file, no install routine just Extract all into a folder on the drive. I have Portable Apps on a USB Thumb drive and used it there.

I also rely upon MajorGeeks for downloads.

BTW, the .iso file worked fine, a 10GB file to be used as a backup/archive save. File Explorer can Mount it and when done Eject just like/appears like a DVD.

Most freeware programs can be extracted using 7-zip without installation. Take imageBurn as an example.
Using 7-zip to extract it (SetupImgBurn_2.5.8.0.exe). The content as shown below:
    Attachment 292375

And you actually need these 2's below to run it.

    Attachment 292376

Hence it can be used as portable. Open the page in post #4 and drop imgBurn.exe to check for virus.

Try using the official website if possible:

    That's ingenious. Have a cookie.

Just got ImgBurn from here: ImgBurn 2.5.8.0 Download - TechSpot

...extracted as in post #7, just kept ImgBurn.exe and the Sounds folder. Then scanned that at Virustotal, and it came up clean. ImgBurn works beautifully as a portable program.

ImgBurn has not been updated for 5 years, it would be better to use something else.
I had rather use a program not updated in 5 years that still works flawlessly than something new and shiny that's buggy.

Ninite is what I use for all of these types of downloads. Super easy, no questions to answer, and super easy updates to all of the applications.

I just installed 2.5.8.0 from the ImgBurn website. No bundled crap, no additional garbage.

    Hi there

    @scott784

might be better to learn how to create iso via cmd line --easy enough if you install the WSL (the Linux subsystem in Windows --it's getting better and better !!).

from the WSL type : Type in mkisofs -o destination-filename.iso /home/username/folder-name

destination file name is target iso /home/... is the source directory where the files sit.
if you want to write to a physical device then the destination will be something like /dev/sro instead of destinstion-file-name.

Easy and doesn't rely on outdated software.

Not sure why so many people today are afraid of using the command line --for things like this its a doddle. !!

    Cheers

    Hi folks

another advantage of making a software ISO image first is that you can then burn this to a USB thumb drive or even create a bootable external HDD/SSD -- use Rufus or simply again from the WSL the dd command.

I can't see ANY advantages these days of using physical DVD / CD's any more except in one case where you have really old physical DVD player. For multi-media on remote devices or local computer programs like KODI, VLC etc will play DVD content directly from iso files anyway.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the replies here.

I haven't had a lot of time to play with Img Burn, but I will say again that my scan from Malware Bytes initially identified the download as safe from majorgeeks.com. However, a subsequent scan of the PC indicated there "was" potentially unwanted programs included and offered to quarantine them for me. Of course, I accepted and saw dozens of pup files from this downloaded version of ImgBurn. Unbelievable.

I am not familiar with creating an iso via the command line; and i'd have to learn how to do that. I do like some replies here such as using 7-Zip and installing programs, such as Img Burn off-line. Also, that Ninite program mentioned sounds like something interesting to check out.

One thing is for sure, there is a tremendous amount of crapware just waiting to be installed on PCs for all of those unsuspecting people. I started using a PC over 20 years ago; and it seemed there were far "more" trustworthy sites, albeit fewer sites versus now days.

It seems like the only conclusion to be drawn (at least with freeware) is to expect crapware unless otherwise proven to be safe; and always proceed with caution when downloading anything what so ever off the internet. The crap included with many of these free programs is, unfortunately, just waiting to be installed.
