Portable apps crashing? Opera and Potplayer giving 0xc000007b error

Some of my portable apps (Opera, Potplayer) are crashing at start with the error "This application was unable to start correct 0xc000007b). I'm on Win10 x64 1803 17134.285.
Reinstalling those apps didn't seem to help. Has anyone come across this issue before?

    Reinstalling those apps
    - er- I thought you said they were portable?

Perhaps you could post your source (URL) for those programs, and their version.

Presumably they are not store apps.

    Thanks.

They are the paf exes from portableapps. You can install to any directory you like.

I downloaded the latest version below and it still doesn't work. Installing it from the portableapps menu also fails with the same error. I think I may have to reinstall win10.

    Edit-
I downloaded opera from the official source (not paf) and chose the standalone installation and it works. Then I tried installing the portableapps version and it crashed on startup. I think the problem is due to portableapps.

Hi, you may well be right.. I don't recall seeing reports here on portable apps, but I don't read all the threads of course.

You could check your Reliability History (Reli in search field) and click the relevant red x to see if there's more info.

The error number was reported here- might suggest a clue:

and note the reference to Visual C++ here:

I've installed the PortableApps feature on a USB Thumb drive and a few portable apps following [not those 2 specific apps] and haven't seen such issues yet. I haven't a need to work with portable apps on the computer's HDD, wanted it for the portability when working on clients' computers on their site. The apps I've used in that manner were complete.

The only red x's in the reliability history was for svchost.exe "stopped responding" and most of the time, there was an update for the days with the red x's. I never remembered any error messages that popped up about svchost before.

I checked the links and downloaded vc++ for 2017 which was the only one missing in programs and features and the problem still happens. Went down the rabbit hole of trying to install vc++ redistributable for 2015 only to find out that 2017 supercedes and overwrites it. Logging in and running as admin didn't help as well.

If I can't figure it out, I think a reinstall is in order. How/where do you suggest I download the latest Win10 iso so I don't have to wait and download a ton of updates. I used a tool from heidoc.net in the past.

And is this the right place to get cummulative updates?

You could try an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data and most settings.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade | Windows 10 Tutorials

This will not repair user profile issues, but replaces all Windows system files and restores some basic settings.- a really useful repair option. The tutorial includes a link for downloading an iso. There's also a specific tutorial on downloading iso's if needed.

And any iso can be obtained via a tool via links from a 'stickied' post at the top of the Software and Apps section here.

Expect 1 cumulative update after the repair install, possibly minor ones.
