Just a small update to say that I have tried the dism thing, as well as done some more chkdsk calls (which actually found bad sectors to fix this time), but the situation has not become better....

F8 after F5 or F12 brought me to a black screen. The flashing cursor screen is what comes up before the black screen.
However with msconfig, I can set it up so that it will automatically boot into...
So it is just a reset in the end...
Is there any way to force booting into safe mode without access to msconfig in WinPE?
I can boot into normal setup media, just not your Bootable PE Rescue Disk one.
